Do you think that 18 year olds should be able to drink alcohol?

Me and one of my neighbor was talking about how the law prevent eighteen year old adults from drinking alcohol and going to bars. But it don't prevent a teen if he/she was join our armed forces or to become a independent from their parents.

I think that allowing eighteen year olds fight along with the armed forces and becoming independents but not letting them have the same choice as an 21 year old is completely unfair to the young citizen adult.

What do you think about teenage drinking of 18 and up?

Let's see...  At 18 you're old enough to vote, old enough to stand trial as an adult, old enough to join the military, old enough to be drafted into said military, old enough to be kicked out of your house by your parents if they don't want you there.  You're either an adult at 18 or you're not, and since the rest of society says that you are, drinking laws ought to be changed to say that you are as well.

some states do allow 18 yr olds to drink but i think 21 is a better age

No I don not believe that 18 year olds should be able to drink alcohol.  I drank alcohol before I was of the legal age.  Big mistake.  I was not mature enough to handle the responsibility.

i dont think they should be considered an adult until they are 21 just my opinion .

I was allowed to drink at 18 in the Army (on bases and in the city around the post anyways...although I wasn't carded at any time (and I looked to be about 15 or 16 too).  I think if you are in the military it should be allowed, although it might not be the best idea.  In such an environment one is generally fairly closely monitored/evaluated so if it causes problems it will be readily apparent.

If 18 is considered an adult by all other standards they should be allowed to drink.  3 years does not make that much of a difference on maturity.

Either way if it's legal or illegal 18 year olds are drinking. I mean they go to college.

I do not think they are mature enough to handle alcohol. Having been a bartender in the past and it seems the younger they are the more they drink they just don't think.

The drinking age hasn't really stopped underage kids from drinking anyways.

Well, considering there are a lot of other things that you can do at 18 and you're considered an adult, then yes, you should be able to drink.   Having said that, I agre with one poster who thinks you shouldn't be considered an adult until 21.

When I was 18 I thought so, and a good argument can be made, like Tupac said "Did you ever stop to think, Im old enough to go to war but not old enough to drink?!" 18 is an adult in every aspect except drinking and gambling. BUT theres a good reason for this.

When prohibition ended and alcohol became legal, the legal drinking age in most states WAS 18. States one by one started changing the laws to 21 instead of 18 and guess what happened? A HUGE decrease in car crashes and DEATHS was found as a direct result of this change in age limit. And keep in mind the teenage drinkers werent the only ones affected by this, this includes people they crashed into that prolly were sober.

So should it be legal at 18? sure if you dont mind seeing a huge increase in automobile accidents and deaths. The thing is, in my opinion theres nothing wrong with an 18 year old drinking, but there IS something wrong with an 18 year old getting Drunk! and you cant exactly enforce the ammount that someone drinks, it wouldnt work.

O btw it IS legal for someone even younger then 18 to drink, if under supervision of, and bought by, the parents, legal guardian, or spouse that is over 21, in most states.

No,I don't think so. 18 is still too young anyway for drinking no matter what. They can't manage the responsibility after drinking.
