Losing A Sense
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:41:33 pm »
If you knew that tomorrow you had to wake up without one of your five senses, which would you choose? The traditional five senses are sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.

I've asked this to a few people and it seems many are more than willing to give up taste because it is the one they would not miss the most.

If it was a choice and you had already lived life it would be extremely hard because you know what you are missing out on. For example I LOVE music and knowing the words not just the beats and vibrations so that one would be extremely hard for me to lose. I would hate to lose my sight because I don't like to depend on people and that would force me to have to ie. needing to be driven around.

Although it is also an easier way out I think I would choose to lose smell

This is a tough one to answer. I would have to choose  sight.  I have heard when a person goes blind it enhances their hearing

Smell would be one that I could do without, I'd miss it sure, but it beats being blind or deaf

I got hit with Bell's Palsy before and it took out some of my sense of taste (not all).  This was so strange as some foods that I used to love tasted terrible to the point of me spitting them out.  I  had to sample every food that I had not qualified under the effects to be sure that I would like it.  It actually took over a year for my taste to return to normal (actually I am not even sure that it is normal but it isn't bad like it was anyways.  Some foods, such as potatoes, taste better than I can ever remember them tasting when they are prepared completely plain and unseasoned.).
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I would go with smell since smell and taste are intertwined and I would rather be able to enjoy my food than smell the garbage or, etc..  Plus I may still be able to use taste to have a small amount of smell ability.

I would dearly miss losing any of them. Losing my sense of taste or smell would have the smallest impact. I do not know which to choose because they are linked together. However if I losst the sense of taste, maybe I could lose some weight!  LOL

Definitely taste or smell.  Nice to have but not essential for mobility and safety.

If I have to give up a sense, it would be touch; I would be missing out on many things in life, but at least I can still see, hear, etc.

Oh that's hard... I love music so hearing is out of the question... I love to draw and take photos so sight is also out the door. I also am an extreme sweet tooth so no taste would be a no no. I think I'd have to say smell.

I would choose smell, because I keep a cold all the time. So I can’t smell most of the time anyway.

I'd have to say taste.  It'd certainly be easier to lose weight and stay fit if sweets didn't taste so om nom nom delicious!
