I believe if someone is experiencing intense pain they need to consider what's causing that pain rather than trying to cover it up with highly addictive medication.  Some people who are in pain need more minerals...especially...calcium.  Calcium is considered a pain reliever and tranquilizer.  Often times people experience tooth pain because they're not getting enough calcium.

I self medicate.  I lean on my book called The Prescription For Nutritional Healing and what I can find at the health shop and sometimes...over the counter medication.

I understand that sometimes it's necessary to use prescription drugs as well.

Hi!!! I wish I had ten years under my belt. Sometimes I can't get ten minutes under my  belt.

Ditto.  I use a mix of ibuprofen, Tylenol and an aspirin.  Ibuprofen and aspirin upsets some peoples' stomachs and even ulcers, so they should always be taken on a full stomach.  So many addicts became addicts unintentionally, and it's very sad.

The doctor guest on Dr Oz was  Dr. Mercola. His newsletter is worthwhile. There are natural remedies that have been around for thousands of years.
That sounds pretty trustworthy to me. There are websites for native remedies. I have fund a number of uses for apple cider vinegar: heals sore throat, helps sleep....honey and cinnamon, coconut oil. Research is valuable. I am glad I did the research and friends passed on valuable information to me.

Just as crazy is how the insurance companies are forcing doctors to prescribe prescriptions.  I was working two forty hour a week jobs and had tried, was prescribed, provigil which is made for clarity in shift workers. The insurance company said that adderall (for those with attention deficit disorder) was better.  No wonder this is such an abused drug...people can't access what fits their needs because of the insurance companies. It is so abused that the country had a shortage in 2011.  The FDA monitors the ingredients but doesn't monitor how much is alloted to generics covered by insurance.

Yes trust me my addiction was very unintentional. But it happened and I deal with it daily. I was clean at one point, and then thought to my self well one pill wont hurt. LOL Yea I am a dumb *bleep*. And yes you have to want to change, but if you knew what detox was like, that want to change becomes VERY hard.

Good topic and I agree with you. I have found over the last few years that I have been moving more to homeopathic remedies. First they work and work well. I have also added herbal remedy for many things and have gotten off of several prescription "maintenance" medications.  I feel better and know I am doing things to strengthen my immune system instead of weakening it.

What will she need as an adult woman if she goes right to strong meds as a child?  Not good parenting in my opinion.  A few ibuprophen should do the trick, if not, seek a doctor's opinion.  I would never give my child meds without professional opinions and for good reason.  Sad.

I agree that people should avoid taking narcotics. I had surgery as a teen and I found myself taking codeine even after I didn't need it because I liked the way I felt. I chose to stop. Then, I had vicoprofen after another hospitalization and ran into the same thing as codeine. My dr. gave me a script that could be refilled too many times. I was able to stop, however. When I get stressed, I still want the vicoprofen...

You can find me on Youtube!

I've known many people who've ended up addicted to pain meds. prescribed by their doctor.  I stay far away from those.  Last thing I need is to be addicted to some pain medication.

??? We have become a country where medication is the answer to everything. Healthy living?
Good nutrition? Too hard. Take a pill for the consequences. Don't get me wrong; there have been advances that have provided relief for long term conditions such as diabetes, muscular dystrophy etc.
But, every day we are sold a bill of goods by the pharmaceutical industry whose only interest is their own benefit. We have been conditioned to think we need a pill for every glitch in our physical condition.
We frequently hear of adverse effects from previously touted medications. The medical community has also promoted medication over other alternatives. Easier to write a prescription rather than to  treat the whole person. I have no doubt that addictions have been brought about by this and that is horrific. But what about rendering good medical care?

I am encouraged to see that our local pediatricians no longer promote cough/cold remedies to my grandsons. Rather, they recommend  a teaspoon of local honey as local honey carries the antibodies the kids need. At least there are some who recognize the benefits of such treatment and hopefully the next generation will not be so over-medicated and dependent.
Hopefully....

I understand medications for heart disease and things like that. I am more referring to pain meds and antibiotics, most of them are useless. I don't even take my son to the doc unless he is seriously ill, because I don't want them giving him another damn antibiotic. They are give them the same cheap *bleep* antibiotic expecially if they are on medicaid and eventually that antibiotic stops working because they have used it soo many times. And even when it comes to diabetics, some of that medication is pointless too because if people would get up and excercise and lose some weight there diabetics wouldn't even need to be medicated. I understand some people that do have it aren't over weight and they can't manage it. But ALOT of cases are due to peoples weight and lifestyle. Which could be preventable.

I agree too. Sometimes it's best not to medicate. It's just not needed. I mean, you don't want a situation where a doctor won't give you medication, but sometimes it's like they just throw it at any problem that comes along.
