Senseless medicating!
« on: January 04, 2012, 07:34:58 am »
Ok so I belong to drugs.com drug forums because I have been an on and off struggling addict. Always narcotics. I was just reading a post to the forum about a mother who had a daughter with menstrual cramps, she wanted to know if it was safe and ok to give her teenage daughter hydrocodone for menstrual cramps. This is why the drug problems in america are getting more and more out of control, Why not try something over the counter for this before you would go to hydrocodone one of the strongest pain meds on the market. I am not saying this little girl doesn't need something stronger than ibuprofen but I am saying, Menstrual cramps have been around for centuries and have been coped with for years with our narcotics. I am not saying there aren't people out there that don't need this treatment. I am just saying for heaven sakes try something mild before going to narcotics!!!!

I agree with you.  I got into a minor car accident over the summer and having only slight pain as a symptom, the doctors prescribed Vicodin.  They seem very lenient in some cases its very strange.

That's not the only problem with medicating unnecessarily, a lot of people take antibiotics when they have a cold (even though antibiotics do absolutely nothing to cure a cold) which creates new strains of the virus that are also resistant to medication and more dangerous to the host.

I agree, doctors don't even try to fix anything without medicine anymore. They give antibiotics and pain meds for EVERYTHING. You know and for the people who actually do need pain meds they can't get them because doctors have prescribed sooo many to addicts, that there are soo many rules set in place now for them, it's hard for them to get them when they really need them. It's all sorts of messed up.

I know right. I have worked in the medical field my entire life, and it always amazed me those frequent flyers that bring there kids in every time they have a runny nose. Come on really?? They are more likely to catch something more serious waiting to see the doc, then they are at getting help for a runny nose.

Yes I agree, America has to get a grip on being high, in my humble opinion. Other people say this about us:" They're the richest country in the world but the people seem to need to be high on drugs especially."

With all due respect everyone, I'm not pointing the finger at any one in particular, we're all in this together, it's a struggle to say the least. :peace:

Yes I know that's its the people out there that are contanstly in and out of the doctors offices for pain meds or antibiotics for their kid that is sick every other day insisting the doc give them something. I is an endless battle, It's not ever going to end. They aren't going to stop medicating people because there are people out there that DO need these medicines.

That seems to be the way of the Medical field!! My sister in law is a retired Nurse and my wife had some teeth removed and she asked what the dentist gave her. I told her some antiobiotics for any infection, she had about a fit!! What no Perkiset!! She was in the Nursing field for 30 years and it was so easy to get, something to go to sleep, something to wake up, something for when you had a pain. She was disabled about 3 years ago because she has very bad Shakes and could no longer administer injections, I believe the condition came on from too many Medication she has taken over the years but, you can't convince her of that!!!

We live in a society where we have the mentality that if we don't like what we feel take something to alter the feeling. Alcohol, sleeping pills no dose.... And commericals help to reinforce this, back ache, knee aches, sore throat, ect. ask your dr. to prescribe this medication or that one per the commerical's advice. Pain is natures way of saying something is not right and maybe something needs to change.  But why worry about fixing the problem if you can" take a pill and get over it " even if the result is only temporary.

When people start taking too much medication for each and every small illness, then one fine day,  when they get old, their immune system is down, and if they get sick, their body wont respond to medicines, and no medication will work. This has happened to a family member, and no day goes by without me thinking about this tragedy :'(

Just being around them in my field of nursing. It seems that you have to take one pill for the ailment, one pill to counteract a side effect of that pill and so on, until you become a walking pharmacy.

I believe some people go to the doctor, ER, clinic, etc, pay their copay if they have one and expect something besides, change your behavior, stay home, gargle with salt and warm water, etc for their time.  I also think some providers may be more than willing to provide prescriptions needed or not.  Just like there are some providers, you will be hard press to get a prescription out of.

I went to an urgent care facility that my medical group contracts with as I could not wait until the evening to get into the afterhours clinic.   I watched people leave with bags of medication and became uneasy and was sure that twlight zone music was playing in the background.  For one woman it was her third visit to the facility....  The triage form indicated that the facility did not participate in any prescription drug programs/insurance, if you needed medication you needed to participate in their program.    I accepted a shot to deal with the pain, neck brace and x-rays.   I declined  the MRI and the medications to go.

Dr Oz just had a show about that.  His guest was a doctor fighting this very thing.  They both recommend natural remedies.  Just look at how many commercials there are for class actin suits against one pharmaceutical company or another because their drugs caused harm.  Doesn't that violate the hypocratic oath?   :dontknow:

As for the mother who wants to give her daughter strong pain killers...  I went through the same suffering as her daughter and had to just tough it out with ibuprofen.  Today I'd recommend getting the girl checked for hormone imbalances and other female disorders.  Her suffering could be ended with a simple herbal supplement such as vitex.   :peace:
