Celebrating New Year with guns.

It is tradition here in Chicago... a stupid, dangerous, and deadly tradition.  There are public service announcements and print advertising around New Years all over the city reminding us to not shoot in the air at New Years.  I don't know who is dumber... the people shooting or the politicians who authorized spending taxpayer money to make the advertisements.

My local news reported a Navy Seal shot himself in the head with his own gun on accident, probably trying to impress his lady friend that the gun is unloaded.

Why do we have to celebrate the New Year begining by firing a gun? I have a problem with this one a gun in the hands of an intoxicated person, buttlets have to land somewhere let's all think about this one.

I thinks it's pretty idiotic to start firing a loaded gun in the air just as a celebration.  Then what happens when a stray shot accidentaly hits someone??  Are you gonna claim we were just celebrating with a dangerous weapon that I know can kill someone, but I don't care because I was celebrating?  That is just reckless and inconsiderate, and you are endangering so many people.  What is wrong with this society?

I am a Vietnam war veteran from the United States Marine Corps, 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company, 1st Platoon. I think its absolute idiocy for people to shoot guns in the air on new years celebrations. Every year people get shot and killed by these idiots. When will they learn. It's because people like you that the Government wants to take away our rights to bare arms. Though they can't ever take that away from me. hah.

I do not even go out on New Years Night to celebrate anymore because I am too afraid because of all the guns I hear being fired off. I would rather stay at home and go party on another night just to avoid all the drunk people firing guns.

The POINT is that you can hurt yourself with any weapon that is not properly used. Get a clue or buy one if you have to.

You are 100% correct. The bullets do not just 'disappear' because you did not aim the gun at someone. There have been many documented cases of someone getting hurt by stray bullets.
