non-traditional thanksgiving meal
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:29:20 pm »
my husband didn't grow up in the USA and thanksgiving didn't have the same 'tradition' for him
we are thinking of making bbq ribs and/or a rack of lamb... I have to decide soon
I hope some day my sons will know a traditional american thanksgiving, but if not, I at least know they will grow up thankful for what they have

Create your own traditions with what ever meal you choose we sometimes eat other things beside ham and turkey.  Like roast or steaks.  Make it your own.

the food is just a perk anyway....its the thought of giving thanks that counts.  i figure thats one of the big ones to be thankful for is that you have food to eat. so many dont these days

You could make a traditional thanksgiving dinner some year. Make a small turkey, stuffing, candied yams, some kind of vegetables, biscuits and a pumpkin pie. That's plenty. I mean some people really go all the way out with tons of food but I don't think it's really necessary nowadays. I've always wanted to try a fried turkey. They say it's really good. You fry it outside. That would give hubby an idea of our tradition.

But there's really no set rules anymore. I remember one year we had lobster. Another year we had steak, ham.......

I think you don't need to have traditional Thanksgiving meal to have a blessed Holiday.  Just gather your family and friends together and have whatever you like is a good tradition Thanksgiving already :)

Yea, you don't need a turkey to have Thanksgiving.  As long as your eating with the ones you love, that is a successful Thanksgiving.

You're absolutely right. food doesn't matter what matter is who do you share this special event with and how do you feel about it

My family is from the US and went non-traditional this year.  We all had a Thanksgiving breakfast together instead of the usual meal and all the fuss of cooking something big.

Amen to that. Having a Turkey is a perk for us and in this economy there are many people who cannot afford such a large meal. Enjoy your company, that is what makes the day anyway!

We try to have seafood ( crabs and shrimps) for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners.  It is nice to have something else.

Fried turkey is the best. It's so juicy and full of flavor. A regular baked turkey to me is a little bland. Healthy, but lacking taste IMO.
