Dennis Ritchie Rip()
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:29:31 pm »
I just learned that Dennis Ritche passed away on the 12th.  The name probably means nothing to most people but he was one of my heroes.  He was the creator of the C programming language (the language that made me fall in love with programming) and a key co-developer of the Unix operating system.  From my view, this guy was at the heart of it all.

A great description of Ritche is from computer historian Paul E. Ceruzzi : "Ritchie was under the radar. His name was not a household name at all, but . . . if you had a microscope and could look in a computer, you'd see his work everywhere inside.

Thanks for the reply, bhm42004.  I don't know why I feel so compelled to see Dennis acknowledged -- I guess I feel a bit jealous that someone like Steve Jobs is greatly remembered for the sharing of his ideas, but someone like Dennis Ritchie who shared one of the most elegant ways to code a program (among other things) is mostly forgotten.  I see it is sort of like Jobs gave you fish but Ritchie taught you how to fish.
