I live about 5 miles from the DFW airport and rarely here the planes unless the windows are open and even than it is pretty much depending on which way the wind is blowing.  The trains are another story.  About a mile north of a railroad crossing and we can hear them clearly outside the house and really muffled at night.  Have to admit given my choices I would much rather here the train noises than the plane noises.

We live very close to the train lines. In the evenings it seems as if the passing trains "talk" to each other. Sometimes they shout and sometimes they whisper. The only time when I get annoyed is when they are so loud that I cannot hear the TV :(

Yes, because my place is not sound proof.

Yes, I don't live close to an airport, but I do live under a flight path. The planes aren't that noisy unless its bad weather and they have to fly at lower altitudes. I can also hear a train around 5am every now and then.

 We live 6-7 houses from a railroad track so, yes, we definitely hear the trains. One of my favorite sounds is hearing a train go by while it's raining. Very comforting and it puts me to sleep.  :fish:

We used to live where we could hear the trains going by.  I always loved to hear them whistle and the noise from the wheels.  After a while when we would get visitors and they would say "How can you stand the noise from the trains?" we would say "what trains"? We would be so used to it, that we would have to concentrate to hear them!!!

Yes I can hear both. Train about 3 blocks away and airport 1 mile away.

I wonder how you guys sleeps at night. Constant noises of trains and airplans, you can even shoot a movie with those noise lol.

Actually, being a filmmaker, the sound crew prefer to not have noises such as trains and airplanes.  That being said they're shooting a movie in my town right now, just one block from the railroad switchyard.  It's the same place they shot Swing Vote and other films.

As for me I live two and a half blocks from the switchyard so I hear the trains all the time.  They remind me of my brother because he likes trains.  Occasionally I hear an ultralight flying overhead.  One morning I was awoken by the sound of a hot air burner, not because it was loud, but because I crewed for fifteen years and love balloons.  When they were filming Swing Vote I was drawn outside by the sound of a dirigible flying around one day and helicopters another.  ;D  These sounds don't usually annoy me, but my neighbors who blast their music and verbally abuse their children are another story.  :angry7:

I hear planes and helicopters a lot. I see them a lot too. That's probably because I live right by an airport though.  ;D I love hearing trains more though. Especially early in the morning, when I'm the only awake. I like watching them plow on by, completely oblivious to my existence. I don't live quite as close to an active track as I wish I did, but I can still hear them.

Yeah, I live by an airport so I tend to hear an occasional plane once in a while.

My home is insulated well, but every once in a blue moon, I can hear airplanes, choppers, or a train. The planes and choppers, I could do without, but the distant horn of a train is a little pleasant actually.

I don't live near any train tracks but if I plane is a large military plane or if its flying low, I can hear it from inside my house.
