Am looking for a recipe for cranberry relish that will serve also for medicinal purposes to combat infections.

Cranberries increase the acid level of the body which bacteria find difficult to live in.

One recipe I have is just chopped up cranberries mixed with honey ( to sweeten to taste). Can be frozen for future use.

Regular recipe calls for combining 12 ounces of cranberries and one oranges (deseeded - with or without the rind) and 1-2 cups of sugar chopped/mixed in food processor.

Trying to keep the additives to a minimum so the cranberries have the full affect on the infection. Read somewhere that fruit juices (not specified which ones) counteract the value of the cranberries in increase the acid level in the body.

I've been using grocery store Cranberry juice -- which is generally combined with other juices -- and have not found that to be effective. Haven't tried getting 100% cranberry juice at a health store (none available close to me).

I just checked my Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail bottle.  It's from the grocery store and the ingredients are:  Filtered Water, Cranberry Juice from concentrate, Cane or Beet Sugar, Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C)  My doctor suggested using it for the vitamin C after I had a bladder infection.  Hope this helps a little bit.  Sorry I don't have a relish recipe but I'll be watching to see if anyone does. :wave: :wave:

My grandma made a Cranberry Relish from raw cranberries and I believe there was orange rind in it and a diced apple. I don't have the recipe, but the one you have sounds like it.

I don't know any recipes but ginger is a good food to promote health.  It has a lot of anti inflammatory properties. I use it to make ginger tea when I start to feel sick and it knocks it right out.  I'm sure adding some ginger to a recipe will add some kick to the already tart cranberry.

The only recipe I have, is get in the car, drive to the grocery, go in the store, buy a can of ocean spray, go home, open the can and put in a bowl. tah-dah. cranberry relish :wave:

Thanks for the comments and the recipe.  Sounds good; similar to the one I've seen, but the frozen cranberry juice (concentrate) and the dried cranberried are different.

I have discovered that there are cranberry extract OTC pills available that will simplify getting enough cranberry benefits (without cooking).  Not sure how effective they are, but the write-ups make sense and since one pill is equivalent to 7 glasses of cranberry juice -- without sugar -- it makes sense to give them a try.

I still have 4 bags of fresh cranberries to experiment with and I'll see what happens.

I don't have a relish recipe either>it is really hard to find 100% cranberry juice.  I think I might try adding honey to cranberries sounds really good. Thanks for the info.,

I tried my hand at making the relish and it turned out pretty good.

Discovered I can't put all of the cranberries in my osterizer at one time to chop them -- have to put in them in a 1/2 cup at a time and then remove the chopped up stuff before going onto the next half cup. 

one bag of fresh cranberries, washed, drained, chopped with food processer or osterizer.
Take one medium orange and grate off enough zest (orange rind) to get at least 1 teaspoon)
Add zest to cranberry mix
Peel the orange, section and deseed it
Add to osterizer to chop it up and add it to cranberry mix.

Add sugar to taste (I used 3/4 cup)

If you like the taste of nuts and crunch in your cranberry relish, chop up walnuts or pecan and add to mix.

Mix well and put in covered bowl in refrigerate for several hours to mellow.

Can be frozen.

Great with turkey.
Add to plain yogert to give the yogert zest.
Use as jam on waffles, bread or toast -- with or without turkey.

Nummy...I never would have thought about using it in yogurt.  I had some on a waffle just yesterday. :notworthy:

Sorry Ive never made cranbery relish. We use to just have the cranberry sauce from a can and I have never touched the stuff lol
