Some people think it teaches them about responsibility but what happened to just being a kid? I mean its hard times I guess if its a need but if you dont need to why should parents make their young kids work?

i don't think they should MAKE them, but rather
encourage them to.

a part time job isn't going to kill their social life! lol.
if anything, it would improve it. affording to do more
things outside of the parents control, treating friends,
having your own car. i saw a job as freedom when i
was in highschool -- i'm a college graduate and haven't
been without one since i was 16.

would i sacrifice a saturday night to work so i could
afford those shoes i wanted? absolutely!

A student in high school and college is no longer a kid.

Absolutely. Parents should be teaching their kids to be independant from the beginning. From feeding themselves to walking to supporting themselves financially.

School should be their only job during the school year.  If they want a summer job a few hours a week that's fine but I would not want my high school aged child working any other time.  As for college it's their choice.  I don't think it's ideal to work a full time job during the school year but it depends on their circumstances.  If they can do a part time job without it not interfering with their studies then more power to them.

I didn't work in high school because I never wanted or needed to and my parents said school was my job.  I didn't get an allowance but I didn't need one.  In college I only worked during the summers because again my parents said school was my job and thankfully I didn't have to work.  Kids have the rest of their lives to work and slave for a living.

Yes, I think it teaches them responsibilty. Life is not a free ride and they should be able to work and study..

I agree with Cloudsoup, working while in high school and college makes you more independent and buying some things that you want is great.  I did , my kids worked also, so I think its a good thing even if you don't have to. :)

part time in high school, as long as it doesn't interfere with getting the homework done. It helps with self esteem.

I never wanted my daughter to work during her high school years.  Her school work and high school years were too important to miss anything that would be regretted in later years.  We were blessed that she didn't have to work for extra money.  I didn't want her to work during college but she thought she needed more "stuff" than I thought was necessary so she worked for the extras she thought she had to have.  Kids need to enjoy their youth while they can.  They have the rest of their lives to work.  Unfortunately in today's times, it is often necessary for a teen to work to help out with the family expenses.  I am so thankful that I got my daughter through school before my good paying job was outsourced.

Have a wonderful day!

I think students should work when in high school and in college. In high school because it teaches responsibility; some may say that it takes away childhood but if they don't learn it their adult life with be filled with money issues. They should work in college so they can have their own spending money and help out with college expenses

I have a son that is in high school and I would rather him put his education first.  If there is something that he wants to buy then he will usually do some type of yardwork to make the money.  Education is first so he can get into a good college!

I wish i had had a job in high school. Really, what it comes down to is that a job is nothing more than a job. It's a way to make money. If you feel your child needs to make money, have them get a job. If you feel they need to be more responsible, give them chores that don't make them feel stupid. Have them take care of something you know they will enjoy, or at least get a kick out of.

If the kids are involved in sports, it is difficult for them to get a job in high school.  Our grandsons were in football and it took most of their time.  They did work during the summer.  Now they are in college, one of them is in football and is not working this first semester.  He will work after football is over.  My granddaughter is also in college and is working every other weekend in the bookstore at her school.  She gets half the money and the other half goes towards her tuition.  Colleges are very expensive these days, especialy if you go to one that is not connected to a state.

Since so many scholarships today require so-called "community/leadership" hours, if a high school student wants a scholarship, they're better off not working and devoting their time to their classes and community service hours/club hours.  If they aren't gunning for scholarships and want to work, let them work.

I believe if someone is a full time student in college, they shouldn't have to work unless they want to.  Depending on the hours of their classes, work may not be feasible when compared to the research, study, or assignment hours required for some courses.

It should be their choice, not a necessity while they are working on their education.

Well, I do not know about during HS, my daughter was so busy with after school activities that she had no time to work during HS, now she is a freshman at a Community College, and shw HAS a part time job.  Her #1 priority is School, but she works to pay for her school expenses like food, gas and car insurance, and it has taken a relief to my pocket.  Now if  she wants to buy something she just saves for it, and she is getting responsibilities as well.  She took classes very early so she goes to school, does homework and then goes to work later in the afternoon, like 3 or 4 until close.  She is managing fine.

I do not charge rent or food or anything else, but she has to pay for her car insurance which is very expensive and he car expenses, like gas, repairs and maintenance.  The rest of her money is for her.
