No, I don't think so, because you are the one who makes the decision to believe in God and to follow his teachings and put them in practice in your life. If you believe in God and have faith in him you will not have nothing to fear. The way I see religion is as a common group of people who gather to support each other to a common goal which is to follow our God teachings and keep our faith to reach the eternal life in the Lord.

This sounds an awful like religious control, (whether giving such control over was voluntary or not).

I don't think it was meant to control people- I think the people need to acknowledge the fact that you can't go around being mean and hate people without consequences. I think religion helps make you see that
