The Occupy Wall Street Movement
« on: October 13, 2011, 08:12:53 pm »
How do people feel about this? I like their main argument (holding businesses accountable), but it's really sad to see the media displaying the hippie, marxist ideas. It's a shame it had to happen like this.

The whole thing happened in my city (Seattle) and they didn't even tell me first. To this day I'm grossly uninformed about the movement--All I know is they are protesting something, and they feel unjustified...

There was a small protest here with about 30 people.  Heard they received everyhing from cars honking in support from people yelling at them to get a job.  The original premise of the protest was a good one.  Now, it has been overblown and deeply politicized.  A shame.

Overblown and politicized?  How?  The Occupy movement is very apolitical- it's a true grassroots movement and hasn't been coopted.

i think it's great..the guys on stock market have put this country in distress many times due to speculation.  speculation is what caused the great depression. speculation is what caused gas to go over 4 a gallon..i think they need to be punished...by trying to drive up profits in the stock market, they've run the country in the dirt. :BangHead:

And yet even the most devout of liberals, when posed the question of whether speculation should be outlawed will immediately respond with a forceful "NO".   If you don't know the reason why then you have no business at all discussing speculation as you are obviously entirely unfamiliar with it besides it being used in some politician's or political agendas talking points and rhetoric.  Do you understand the risk involved in speculation and just how much knowledge and skill must be put in to accurate predict prices years into the future?  Do you know what happens if they predict incorrectly?  Are you aware that without speculation many farms would go out of business and the cost of food would increase and there would be some items unavailable?

There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I have to politely disagree with you. I see this as the left's response to the Tea Party. It's not a bad thing, but the politics definitely lean left. Just like the way the Tea Party was portrayed in the media very differently from their core beliefs, the same is happening to the OWS movement. Both groups need to do a better job at keeping their extremists members away from the cameras if they want to do anything. All the extremists do is hurt the movement. The media loves to show the wild and crazy of the movement, and the extremists are the easiest way to do that.

This is what happens when millions of Americans are out of work and have nothing else to do but to protest.

If this movement is just because Americans are out of work with nothing else to do but protest explain why other countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Spain, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Chile have join the movement?  Are they out of work Americans too?

Its happening all over the world!  ::) Many are sick of how the banks did bad business , got bailed out and then refused to help the people that had mortgages left. They need to pay that money back! :bs:

They certainly are making a mess in the parks.  I'd be really surprised if they leave them in the same condition they found them.  :crybaby2: :crybaby2:

Just thought I share this:

Inspired by the uprisings across the Arab world, and fueled by the feelings of anger and helplessness of everyday Americans, in the past month Occupy Wall Street has:

  • Gone Global (10 million people worldwide within three days)
  • Flourished with diversity
  • Gained support in the Heartland
  • Changed the conversation

What a month and Occupy Wall Street is just getting starting!
