Hi im a newbie and my name is greenmellojello, I love how you listed all the free surveys. Thanks alot that helps me out alot, cuz i wasnt sure where to search for anymore surveys like that.

...but it's like either they don't have a brain :angry7:... or their just plain stupid...

It's probably just they they're new, rather than "stupid"/not having a brain ; just like we all once were.

Thank you for your very laudatory response.

When I came back to the US, about 2 !/2 years ago, I would have people telling me they own two cars.  You find out they have loans on both and have one 15% paid off and the other 25%, so I'm thinking, "you don't own 2 cars, you own about 40% of one car, the bank owns the rest."  It's the same with a house, they tell you they own a place, but they still have to pay a bank for 10 or 20 years before they actually own the place.
You are absolutely right about people owning 40% of a car or a house. But you know what?  In America, you NEVER entirely own your house or land. The government does.  If you don't pay your property taxes, they can take it all away.

Btw, congratulations on being debt-free!  It must be a good feeling.

Tell me about it, I just paid almost $4000 in property taxes, that takes a large amount from my rental income.

I guess I spent too many years in Europe.  I'm somewhat shocked about how people think here in the US, my home country.  Debt doesn't seem to be a problem here, it's a normal part of life.

As far as being debt free, I basically just got lucky.  During the almost 12 years that I was working in Germany, I was getting paid enough, and had a company car there, so that I didn't need to use my military retirement pay or rental income, plus I had a few hundred dollars left from my pay there every month.  That kind of situation allowed my to pay off my mortgages very quickly.  Once that was done, the retirement pay and rental income just accumulated here in the US, so it wasn't any challenge to pay cash for two cars, spend about $30,000 on home improvements and appliances, and still have a comfortable amount of cash remaining.

I will give myself credit for the fact that I've always been financially responsible, I've had loans in the past, but I always paid them off ahead of time.  However, my present financial situation simply results from largely accidental good luck, I would wish you all the same.

Alaric,if you dont mind me asking...what armed force were you in?And were you in when Vietnam was going on?

Im a few years older then you.I went for my army physical in 1970 and passed with flying colors.Back then Nixon put a lottery in with birthdays and mine fell right in the middle and i never got called.Whew!I was just outta high school and we were all smoking weed then and not sure i would have gone to Nam.

I volunteered for the US Army in the summer of 1971.  I did my basic and infantry AIT at Ft. Lewis WA.  I then went on to other AITs at Ft. Monmouth NJ for fixed cryptographic equipment repair and maintenance, tactical cryptographic equipment repair and maintenance and communication center operations and management.  I was assigned to the HQ of the Berlin Brigade in 1973 and served there for 2 more years.  When my 4 years of service was done, they offered me $10,000 as a reenlistment bonus, that might be close to $100,000 in today's dollars.  Like an idiot, I refused and got out of the Army and got a job in a factory in Berlin.  I would guess that was probably the biggest mistake of my life, if I had stayed in the field of cryptography, I would probably be making over $100,000 a year right now.  As a result of this, I missed service in Vietnam, it was over by the time my service in Berlin was finished.

Anyway, working in a factory in Berlin, or probably anywhere else, was extremely boring and repetitive work.  It got a little more exciting for me when I had the opportunity to help set up a factory in Baghdad, Iraq for almost twice my usual pay.  I spent a few months on that job and then the Herlitz company had two more projects in Nigeria and Indonesia, I volunteered for both, but no contract on either of them was agreed upon.  I realized I was wasting my years and went back to the US and rejoined the Army in 1978.  With my experience as an electronic technician, I was expecting that they would be kissing my butt with moist lips to get me back.  I was considering my next training in satellite communications, my test scores certainly qualified me for a technical job like that.  No such luck, I was surprised to learn they weren't very excited about getting back "prior service" individuals.  They offered me some very unappealing jobs, cook, truck driver and, of course infantryman is also always available.  I was already trained as an infantryman, so I would only have needed refresher training on the new weapons systems.  One job offering was also generator repair technician, and I accepted that because it was the closest thing to my previous experience with electronic work, but I was never happy with the job because it was mainly mechanical and only secondarily electronic.  My First Sergeant in Karlsruhe, Germany, came by my shop one day and saw how fast I was typing maintenance reports.  He bodysnatched me for work in his orderly room and had me set up for OJT (on the job training) as his legal specialist, somewhat equivalent to a paralegal in the civilian world.  I did that job for over 7 years and was able to sit in and observe very many interesting court-martial cases.  After that work, everywhere I was assigned subsequently, they put me in an administrative position, PSNCO (personnel and staff non-commissioned officer), chief administrative NCO, and finally with the ostentatious title of "subject matter expert."  I was working on training material and technical manuals for new systems that the Army was testing and had not yet type-classified.  Since we were the only ones dealing with these systems, then we were, of course, the "subject matter experts."  I retired after 4 foreign service tours and 21 years and 3 months of service at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.

So, yeah, I missed service in Vietnam.  I also missed service in the first Gulf War.  I will say, in my defense, that I was the second person in the Army to call my branch manager at the Hoffman building in Alexandria, VA, in my MOS (military occupational specialty) and volunteer for service in the Gulf.  I was refused and told the only possibility I had of going was to get myself transferred to a combat arms unit that was scheduled to be reassigned there for combat duty.  I had 2 small children and a wife here in MD where I was assigned at the time and she absolutely refused to let me go, I would have had to get myself assigned to some place like Ft. Gordon, GA and hope my unit got assigned to the Gulf, while my family was in MD wondering where I was  It's a big disappointment to me, after all those years of service, that I was never able to experience any actual combat.

My biggest pet peeve is people who have more children than they need, financially or otherwise, and then feel they can continually dump them on other people for too long periods of time, over and over, just because you're a nice person who has no children and their kids want to come over.  They get a piece of my mind, quickly.

If one is 'baby-sitting for free', whose choice is that?

They get a piece of my mind, quickly.

Given your prior replies and unsupported assertions, it's doubtful that such can be spared.

Such a peeve is almost entirely a matter of perspective in that what actually constitutes "being stupid" differs from a merely subjective opinion without basis.  That is, an 'opinion' without basis is not equivalent to one which has some substantive basis.

Specifics? Unwanted litters... REPEAT unwanted litters.  Leaving pets unattended in a car on a hot summer day.  Leaving pets tied outside in a yard for hours on end (and many don't even have water or shelter/shade).  Speeding around town with a dogs head hanging out a car window or the dog skidding around in the back of a flatbed truck.  Tying a dog to a hydrant (or other) to go inside a store leaving the dog vulnerable to a dog-napping and a future as possible dog-fight bait (same as leaving a dog in a vehicle unattended with all the windows down or in a fence where someone can grab them over the top).  Not micro-chipping the pet because most assume "their" pets would "never" run away (micro-chipping has been useful for more than just "run-aways", it's inexpensive, it protects the pet...it's surprising how so many people don't think of it until it's too late).  Not vaccinating a pet or doing the heartworm preventative...and then losing a pet to a problem that could have been prevented.   Abandoning a pet because the family has to move, the pet is old or one can no longer afford them or want them... :angry7:       You know, the stuff that never seems to end...

You make a good case for unthinking apathy being equated with 'stupidity' in the instances mentioned.  Though much of this stems from pets reproducing, (and the money that some 'breeders' make from it), having pets neutered/spayed, (along with other veterinary procedures mentioned), isn't inexpensive for the average pet-owner.  It may be that if such procedures were done pro-bono or, at a greatly reduced cost, more pet owners would utilize them.  These cost the vets money too so, that solution stalemates.

Pets aren't a necessity, they are a luxury.  If people can't afford what that pet needs to not end up suffering, then they would be doing that pet a favor not to bring it home in the first place.  Pets can be expensive.  It takes more than "love" to be a responsible pet owner.  It's surprising how many people will just haul a pet home because it's "cute" and not have done any previous research on it to know what to expect, to know what caring for this new pet will involve.  (Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a "rant"...people tend to get "fired up" over pet peeves and I'm no exception...)    ;)

In this instance, your "rant" has a substantial basis in reality.  The fact that this thread is about "pet peeves" can be taken literally or, colloquially and you combined the two.

lol...I didn't even realize that until you posted. ;D  I  animals and don't enjoy seeing them suffer when it could have been prevented.  So of course my "pet peeves" actually involve pets...funny! :cat: :dog:
