There are over 40 wildfires burning in Texas right now according to the Texas Forest Service map.  The biggest ones are the Austin, Possum Kingdom (west of Ft. Worth), Longview, Houston, San Antonio, Corsicana (south of Dallas) so every major city is being affected.  To paraphrase the Anne Murray song, "Sure could use a little rain today."

I'm a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania and have recently caught word that Texas is actively searching for people to come and help fight these fires. They are short 25 people and are willing to fly down anyone who is open to helping the cause. I believe that after my brothers wedding, should these fires still be significant enough, that I will be heading down.

God Bless everyone! Stay safe!

I telecommute and have a coworker who packed an emergency kit yesterday in case she needed to leave. It is so sad. I hope and pray that these can be controlled soon.

News reports on the Texas wildfires are reporting that there have been 4 deaths in these Texas wildfires, over 1,000 homes have been damaged and several thousand acres have been scorched.  Considering that there are several types of wildfires in play here the best hope is to get some rain soon.  For those of you unfamiliar with the environment there are grass fires and tree fires burning in Texas right now.  Both are hard to fight and require different methoeds.  Geographical barriers like rivers and roads really don't stop them since the embers are blowing in the wind and jump these barriers quite easily.  Best of luck to those who are fighting and have suffered loses.

I agree, born and raised in Texas myself, It is quite devastating. The other thing about fire is it has a tendancy to create its own winds too.  Too bad we have not figured out a way to fight such fires with some type of new technology. That would make for some type of great invention or new method. I am sure there may be some idea that could revolutionize wild fire suppression. Anyone have ideas?

Austin wildfire is still burning but about 65 % under control.  Houston has a three county monstor going and they are talking about the fire burning and evacuations going on for at least a couple of weeks.  The resources are being drained and strained in a big way.

Jeez, sounds like a pretty terrible situation. I feel bad for those people over there. Will pray for rain or something.
