As long as you're very, very sure you'll like the tat for the rest of your life, get one if you want one.  I've got a couple and am very happy with them.  Will they look weird when I'm a grizzled old geezer?  Sure, but I'll still like 'em  8)

I have a tattoo and I still really like it. I'd like another one eventually. My mom was a little hesitant of me getting one but once she saw it she thought it was cute. I guess it just depends on the tattoo, tattoos can be pretty. I just have a little shooting star on the inside of my wrist.

I don't like tattoes all. I don't see the purpose of drawing letters or symbols on one's body; not to mention the pain associated with getting it done.

I have a tattoo and mine didn't hurt at all.  It depends on where on your body you get one.  Some parts hurt more than others.  If you get it on a bone that's the most painful.  If you get it on an area with more fat or muscle it won't hurt as much.

I personally don't have any tatoos but my husband has several.  I just never had the desire to get one!

tattoos are generally a personal decision. I got one a few years ago, and actually forget I have it! Yeah, your friend should make sure she's going to get something she really likes and won't regret 20 years from now. The pain really isn't that bad. It helps if you get a great tattoo artist who knows how to talk and make you feel comfortable. Check out the tattoo parlour for cleanliness.

It's painful, permanent, risky, and silly, in my opinion, but then again, people have free will

I hate tatoos when I was growing up only marines and sailors and the tatooed lady at a side show in the circus had them. I think it's sad that so many people are marking up their bodies like that. When they are older they will wish they hadn't done that. It makes other people judge your worth as lower than it is. It's not just a design it's a statement about character. You may not see it that way but others do.  :o

My son has a bunch of big ones that are pretty but cost more than he could afford.  I think it becomes an addiction.

I personally don't like them but if someone wants one for themselves that is their choice.  It used to be, as others hinted, a symbol of tradition or as an act to stand out and rebel.  Now it is done more often to 'fit in' -- which I find somewhat hilarious and slightly disquieting.  I have seen a few tats that I admired as they were almost works of art done mainly in colors and not dark lined but such is the exception.

I cannot stand the 'tramp stamp' and find them repulsive.  The lines take away from the natural shapes and makes one appear flat and squared where curves are what is admired and should be desired and I wonder why nobody else mentions this.  Fortunately few people fall victim to the tribal fan yet, sadly, there are still plenty doing the Japanese symbols and lettering and even when they are correct the only thing I draw from them is "hey I am trying to be different by doing what everyone else is".

Again they can be done in taste and they can be done as a statement but too often this is no the case.  Many women get them as they think they look nice (and perhaps they do on the pattern) but you don't have to look at them all the time either and should consider that.  Now before anyone who has them or plans to get them finds my remarks undesired you must remind yourselves that these are my opinions and you should live your own life and not worry so much about others.
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.

i have tattoos and love them.  a butterfly with my son's name over it on one ankle, and a butterfly with a tribal band on the sides on the other ankle.  i waited until i was over thirty before getting them, wanted to be positive that i wanted them.  not just as a fad but as something i really wanted.  they're great if you get something that means something to you, not just to fit in b/c e1 else is doing it.  a really good suggestion for your friend, have someone draw what she wants where she wants it with a perm. marker, and keep going over it for about 30 days.  if she doesnt get sick of it, then she'll probably be ok with having it as an inking.  if she does, no harm done and she can eventually just wash it off!

yeah i dont like tattoos either. i think tattoos on a girl sometimes(and i say sometimes) make them look dirty and slutty. i personally don't have one and i dont want one. and i dont want my man to get on either. he doesnt have one and i'm happy.

I don't have any tattoos, many people in my location do though--- they've become "all the rage" here.  I'm friends with a few guys that own their own tattoo businesses and they are very nice guys but because they are all "tattooed up", I've heard people make remarks about how they are rude and stuff--- they would NEVER be rude to anyone.  They are "teddy bears", just because someone has tattoos doesn't mean they are "bad people".   "Tattoo" is also a very popular magazine in my location.  Many people here have alot of tattoos and alot of piercings.  The only thing I would say about tattoos is a young person should be very careful about what they choose as a tattoo and where they are going to have it put.

I recently saw a woman, approximately in her 50's with a tattoo right above her left breast.  At first I wasn't sure what it was a tattoo of...until I realized it was "Winnie the Pooh" and the reason "Winnie" was unrecognizable wasn't because it was done by an untalented artist.   "Winnie" had lost his shape because she was losing hers--- the farther her *bleep* droop, the skinnier "Winnie's" going to get...and he's looking pretty skinny!  ;D
