Lap Top
« on: August 12, 2011, 02:17:07 pm »
I am thinking about getting a good lap top that is not too expensive. Anyone have any suggestions of what kind and where to get it?

Depending on what you are going to use it for, if you are just surfing the web. And doing some online programs, etc. You can go to best buy and
buy like a nice Laptop for under $400. My son got one from Best Buy for under $300.

I got mine at walmart open item for 248. It runs good, I had to buy a battery but you can find them cheap as open items, best buy and walmart, most are just returns, someone couldn't figure it out. ha ha.

If you don't need the cd drive, netbooks or small laptops are always good.  They're also much cheaper than others.  Then you can go somewhere like best buy and get a portable cd drive for your laptop/netbook for about $50.  What lynnc35 suggested works good too, although it's better to pick up the floor models or open items that aren't played with vs the floor models that have been played with.

I do not recommend Dell for anything; I've had so many problems with Dells.  I use HP now.  I find them to be quite reliable.  One thing though at walmart:  don't get e-machines unless you can wipe it completely and reinstall the operating system from scratch.  E-machines is cheap, but they fill the pre-installed operating system with useless programs and advertising for programs.

Dell has an outlet on there website.  I had purchased a "scratch and dent" from them a few years back, and it is the best laptop I have. I am still using it to this day, and I didn't see a scratch on it.  I spent a little over 300 for it.

I did that too.  I have used it to death.  I think I saved about $40-$50 on a netbook by purchasing it from the outlet. Still had the warranty and everything.  In fact I am thinking about doing it again because I am wearing out the keyboard on this one.

I like MACs, but hard to say I'm not slightly biased...does help considering I have an iPhone/iPod.....it all depends on what you want it for I suppose

I was at Office Depot the other day and they had a sweet actual laptop (not a netbook) for under $300.  I almost got it because the keyboard also had a number pad and my birthday is coming up but I didn't yet  :D

I have a emachine I got from Wal-Mart and I have had it for a year and it been great no problems and I believe I paid $298 plus tax and that was reasonable and it is a windows 7. I don't know where you live but look at Wal-mart or K-mart.  If you got to electronic store they are usually higher and if you to office depot they are pretty high. A year ago I bought a laptop, by son bought the same laptop and another lap which was a compaq and than he also bought a Dell desk top and it was all purchased the same day at Wal-mart. It was shortly after my son turned 18 and he is getting ready to turn 20 so I guess its been almost 2 years and they are all good and still going.

It depends on how much you want to spend. I bought a sweet Toshiba with a keypad for $499. And they delivered it for free!

Thank you for all of your input. I haven't gotten one yet...I was looking for one to use at home with the other computers are being taken or so I can take it if I am out somewhere and do some writing. My first children's book is being published! You can go to Crazy Pants on Facebook to "like" the page and get updates on its progress and release.

Aside from craigslist or the *bleep* stores the cheapest way to get a laptop is Amazon.com or Newegg.com.  Either of the dot.com sites listed are the way to go as you can get a new laptop with warranty for much cheaper than any walk in store.  I am looking for a laptop as well and can't decide whether to wait for Black Friday or not.  Wish I knew what the deals are going to be now.  I go to the websites that leak the deals, but no leaks yet as it's just a little too far out.

I'm fairly happy with my Dell. It's been a good little laptop for a while now...  8)
