Another one...hmmm...the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George RR Martin is pretty darn good too.

by Annie Prouxl... she won a pulitzer for this book I believe. A movie was made starring Kevin Spacey a few years ago, but the book surpassed the film in depth and details.
