Bill S.978 ?!
« on: July 30, 2011, 06:14:08 pm »
If you havn't heard of this. In the US, it would become illegal to stream or download copyrighted content. So if you made a video of your son dancing to a song and post it on youtube for your family to see, you could spend up to 5 years in jail!

I think this is crazy and will really effect gamers and people who post on youtube.

For more info, you can read here : http://notch.tumblr.com/post/7152523035/bill-s-978

Let me know what you think!

I guess it would be because of the song or what every it may be.  But that would affect the America's Got Talent because they select some one who auditions on You tube to enter into the contest like the six week or somthing so they wont be able to do that at all which will suck! I like the america got talant and last season this young girl about 8 or 9 sang opera and now she has her own cd and she was picked off You Tube.  I think that are getting to carried away with some of these laws.

One more overbearing government law to take away our freedoms. Hopefully it won't pass.

our government needs to focus on more important things instead of homemade videos

Really! we have a huge debt problem that they should focus on, not what our kids are doing on youtube. Us Parents can control that.

Now thats taking things way too far. What do they want to do? Restrict everything we do here in the U.S.? If they start restricting the internet here, then it will be so watered down, no one will bother going online. This madness has to stop.

People really are getting carried away with the laws these days. Seems like everyone is on some sort of half wit mission.  :BangHead:

The same thing will happen to us what happened in egypt. They restricted internet access to google, youtube, yahoo, facebook, and any other site that may lead them to go against the government. And what did the people do? They hacked all government websites in a protest.

How would this law be interpreted with the Fair Use law? I would think that personal performances / covers would be covered under Fair Use... I guess I could see if they required you to acknowledge the original artist in the credits...

There are much bigger problems than people using their creativity to make homemade videos online. Giving credit to the song and artist should be enough.

I clicked the link to watch the youtube video it liked to.  Provided some very interesting information.  I'd encourage people to watch it, and review the links that individual provided for more information (including a link to the bill).

Sounds like the intent of this bill is to provide stronger punishment for those individuals who are intentionally violating copywrite law regarding streaming TV, movies, music videos - however, due to the broad language used in the bill, if passed as currently written, even kids singing a popular pop song would be in violation of this bill.  I'm usually not one to jump on such band wagons, but this is one I will probably take action on and write my congress and senate representatives to re-look at the wording to ensure it doesn't impact or conflict with the fair use laws of such material.
