My husband loans money to his best friend and his sister and neice.  They all are very good about paying us back.

I have learned from past experiences and I don't let people borrow money anymore.

There are about 2 people in my life who have borrowed money from me in the past, but they have always paid me back with no problems, so if I am in the position to lend those are the ONLY two people in my life that I would let borrow money from me.

And family is the worst.  I love my family do death!!!!  But if we have already established over and over and over again that I lend you money and you don't pay me back, please don't ask me to borrow any money now or in the future.  Unless it was something really serious or life and death, I just couldn't do it. I have learned my lesson.

I also make sure that I always get something in writing when it comes to lending money to the two people I mentioned above.  Like I said I have never had a problem with either one of them before, but I have learned that you can never be too careful these days.

One thing you have to learn, as I did  that when you loan money, 99% of the time you never get paid back.  Well at least that's the issue I run into.  So now I never loan money for any reason.

I have been in the same situation. It's really hard when family borrow money and act as though they didn't. When they see you they don't even mention it. What I realize now is that if I lend someone money I'm really giving it to them because you might not get it back. Some people take kindness for weakness.

Consider it at gift.  Now you don't have to buy them anything for their birthday or Xmas.
That is the way I handle it. I never LEND money. If someone I care about needs money and I can afford to give it I do. I never give money and expect it back. Doing that ruins friendships.

i honestly cannot tell you the last time i loaned
someone money, or when anyone has even asked
to borrow money from me? i've payed for friends/relatives
when we've gone out and done things, but never
directly lent money...

i guess i wouldn't be opposed to it, depending on
the person/the amount. however, i'd never expect
it back. once it's gone, it's gone. and if you DO
get it back, bonus!

[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

I don't ever "lend" money to people with the assumption I am going to get it back. Therefore I rarely do it at all. If I feel someone really needs it then I will loan it and it is a bonus if I get it back later.

I feel lending money to others is a bad idea unless it's to your immediate family. Something will always go wrong in my mind and you'll end up being out however much money. Even when I lived with roommates I had a hard enough time getting my deposit back from them. I've borrowed money from my parents, but again that's immediate family. My parents have also lent it to my siblings so they could buy their houses. Works out pretty well if you just keep it in the family.

If a person really needs to borrow money, I do lend out, if I can spare it. I was once told that if you let someone borrow money, you will never be broke. If found that not to be true, especially if the person never gives it back. Never lend if you can't afford it.

I'll let people borrow money until it starts getting annoying. Where they are always asking and not paying me back
