Needed Baby Items
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:03:14 am »
when having a baby... what are the ESSENTIAL items that one might need?
I have always thought that people get/buy TOO much stuff and never likely use it all

One thing a new born baby does not need is shoes, because they're not yet able to walk on their own.

I loved those rubber pads covered in a felt/fleecy material when my child was small. It saved on changing the crib all the time when the diaper didn't contain all the....you know. Those pads were a lifesaver. they were about a 16-20" square that I laid him on for his sleep. If he had a blowout, those pads were waterproof and washed in the machine. I used them constantly. Saved me from ALWAYS having to change the crib sheets. I also used them to change him on the sofa. They saved us from many "accidents". I remember only having 3 of them and could have used 10!

Always have "Numbzit" when they are teething, and a rough looped (cold) wash cloth that they can chew on during that time also. My son chewed on that for hours....and loved it. It also picks up most of the "drooling drips" they have. Bibs are also good to have during that time to protect their clothes from becoming "drenched" with drool while teething. The large bibs are the best.

My baby is now 11 yrs, but it depends on how much money you can afford to spend. If a mommy loves her baby ....she wants to buy the best and every thing new that comes out. But yes, make sure you got the essentials first then spoil yourself n the baby :) good luck and congratulations !

If you are planning on breast feeding a breast pump is super handy. Defiantly by diapers in bulk, my son is four months and we go through 2 boxes a month.

My sister says they just need diapers and food and love til they start crawling around.  She raised several healthy well adjusted kids so I think she must be right.  I unforturnately, never had a chance to find out personally but I would think it would depend on your climate....a blankie is probably essentlal too.

All of these are great answers. You should check out freecycle.org and see if there is a local chapter in your area. It's a great place to get rid of and receive baby stuff (and a boatload of other things, too!)

you dont really need binkies, they will just hurt the baby's teeth when they come in. try not to give it to them unless they wont shut up after u have tried everything u can to make them stop crying.

Well I have a six month year old and alot of the stuff said already is good. I have alot of diapers my aunt buys from SAMs club. And wipes yes they go by fast I didn't need a diaper genie really but they do have these bags and they have a scent when they have a blowout there great. I love my daughter and I'm enjoying every moment :)

I agree everyones answers are great! I'd say stuff that other then the basics (diapers, wipes, crib/bassinet, car seat, clothes) Is just alot of love and patience. Its a new experience for the baby and the parents. Other then that I recommend getting as much sleep now as you can because the 1st month might be a little tough   :)  Congrats!

I agree with the first aid kit as well, the one I had contained stuff like infants tylenol, for when the babies a few months. a thermometer, Mylicon, those gas drops. that really came in handy because my baby always had gas.
I would wash my babies clothes in the Dreft Detergent also and I used babywash or Dove soap to bath my baby. Qtips and alcohol pads came in handy for me also when it was time to clean the ambilical cord area, whatever u call it.
