After reading the article do you think the cops were right in macing the boy? I cannot believe how unruly kids are these days and the expletives he was using. My fiancees dad said they should have maced the mom too ha

Totally deserved it. I probably would have done something worse to him if he went after me. Sure they should have tried to talk him down, but whatever. The kid even admitted he deserved it, so...

I have been arrested several times there for peacefully protesting columbus day, and year before last, as a fund raiser these same cops were marketing tee shirts as a fund raiser depicting a cop in full riot gear, wielding a night stick, with the slogan "we get up early, to beat the crowds". Shall I say more?

What? I would like to know more about this. And for the record I do not like Columbus day at all.

I'll see if I can find my file on it. As for Columbus Day, it is what it is and I wont begrudge peoples right to celebrate how they choose, I just want the whole truth to be known.

I wont 'jack anyones thread but we can start a new one addressing the subject or anyone can go to past threads and read my views on it.

This all started BEFORE he even got to the school:

Aidan started acting up while on the bus to school, the police report said. He began screaming and then continued after breakfast while throwing chairs at his teachers.

My question (which is beyond obvious to ME) is this: Wouldn't it have been a really good idea to have pulled him into the principal's or a counselor's office as soon as he entered the school from the bus? I realize hindsight is 20/20, but didn't the past 2 incidents where they "talked him down" give someone, anyone the forethought to know things were ready to blow with this kid again?!

Not to worry. They'll stick him on mandatory meds and not have to deal with the actual problems that lie under the surface here. I can't wait to read about him in the future when he decides to take a gun into his 7th grade classroom/school..... :(

I did not read the article but I would have to wonder what could an 8 year old child do to get maced. How dangerous could he have been. Was he wielding a toy gun.

If you didn't read the article, why ask the question? The answer is in the article. ::)

LEO's are supposed to be trained about using excessive force. A kid+and trained adult cop=pepper spray? doesn't really compute in my way of thinking.

In all honesty, I'm torn on this.  Obviously the child has issues that need to be addressed.  He clearly said in the video that he wanted to kill people, and that is why he was brandishing the pointed stick.  Hopefully they really have gotten him into a program he clearly needs.

As for whether the police should have used mace...I understand the reasoning.  You've got an 8 year old cursing and screaming and trying to break down a door to kill people...this was probably the safest thing they could have done...I don't see this as a whether or not he deserved it issue.  IMO, he deserves adults who will listen to him and take the time to figure out why he is having these issues rather than place the blame elsewhere.  Is there something else the police could have done to subdue the child?  Certain restraints, physical maneuvers, perhaps, but there was a bigger chance for injury in that case.  I've had a run in with pepper spray in my time (used to carry it in my purse, and let's just say I'm not the most coordinated when my purse is messy) and its not as bad as having a broken bone or a bruise (I've had both).

The important thing now, though, is not lamenting about whether something else could have been done, but getting this child help before he turns into another Dylan Klebold or Eric Harris (yeppers, according to the video, its the same school district as the Columbine shootings).

I understand what you are saying Amy and it does have some merit. My point is considering past episodes and the mindset inherent within that department as demonstrated by the shirt I refered to clearly illustrates  that excessive force and intimidation is the norm there. Yes there are Klebolds(sp?) but what is this dept. encouraging within its ranks?

I can show you a pic of atleast 10 officers piling on top of a disabled wheelchair bound person for demonstrating at one of the events I attended there. This dept. really needs to get a grip on their methods. They have injured many with their heavy handed tac-tics.

I agree with you there, Walks.  Peaceful protests do not warrant pepper spray and physical tactics.  Turning a water hose on a civil rights protester?  Ridiculous and extreme.  Using pepper spray on a cursing kid brandishing a pointed stick trying to break down a door so he can attack 9 other people?  Not so extreme.

...on second thought, we could totes turn this into an American Express commercial.  "Pepper Spray...$10.  Tools to fashion a pointed stick...$25.  Seeing a crazed kid get maced...Priceless."

You laughed...admit it.

Seems like he needed something to get his attention that the situation was serious. Maybe it will teach him a lesson. If the cops had tried to restrain him physically, then the mom would probably be trying to sue them.
