Racism
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:56:31 pm »
Sad world. My African American friend works at this one restaurant and hes been asking for a promotion, hes been working their for about a year and a half now. And his caucasian work mate just got promoted before him and hes only been there for about 3 months. I don't know about this, but in my opinion that is racist. And my friend says the manager is Caucasian.

Your friend may have asked for a promotion but he also has to demonstrate he is capable.  Asking won't get you much you need to show also.  In some cases it's not about how long you've been there.  He could have been there five years but just because he wants a promotion doesn't mean he will get it just by asking.  Maybe the other person had more experience or he demonstrated more that he was more qualified for the position.  Just because someone else was picked over him that is white doesn't necessarily mean it was due to racism.  Yes there is still racism in this country but you have to look at all the circumstances before you can clearly say that was the case.

I agree.  You have to prove your are worthy of the promotion -- unfortunately just seniority/experience is not always enough for the promotion.
racism certainly does exist

I think your friend should ask why he was not selected so he can improve in those areas and maybe next time he will be more likely to get the job, if the boss doesn't have a good response than he could seek advice on equal opportunity laws, etc.

Racism is still very much alive today. You would think in a time such as this with so great blessings and prosperity, people would learn to shed thier bias and prejudices and just love one another. But, being racist; that's the way the world would rather be.
