With a baby, the best measure is to always call a pediatrician.

When my daughter was that age, though, I used the Vick's plug ins, put Vick's baby vapo rub on the soles of her feet and put socks on her before bed, and made sure she stayed hydrated and comfortable.  I used the nose bulbs as long as my child would let me as well.  Baby noses saline is a great invention as well.

If it is a bacterial illness, antibiotics will most likely be needed to help get over it.  If it is a viral illness it will need to run its course because an antibiotic will not make it go away any faster and will cause tougher bugs in the future.

But, please, call your child's pediatrician if you need advice.  They usually have nurses staffed to help out with these questions, and they'd rather you ask if you have a concern.

A small suggestion: program this number into your cell phone: 800-222-1222.  It is the poison control hotline, and I call them about EVERYTHING.  I have learned that petroleum jelly will cause diarrhea if ingested among other things, and they are incredibly nice.  It is a nice thing to have on hand when you have a little one getting into everything, as yours will be in a few months.

rub vicks salve on the tiny feet and put some white socks on those little happy feet. do it daily.
our nerve endings are on the bottom of our feet, and the vicks will go up into the body and help the little
guy get better. I have a 3 yr old great grand child who was over last month. she was coughing so badly.
I ask mom  & dad how long she had been doing that, they said for a week or more. they had given her
all kinds of baby cough syrup, etc. was afraid to over medicate here.
she spend the night with me, I put vicks on her little feet and white socks. she has not coughed since.
try it. pray your precious baby gets well soon

Never heard of putting Vicks on the bottom of your feet for babies.  Does it wor for adult too?  But to answer your question please, please take the baby to the doctor.

it works for me. I am not much on doctors unless I can't handle it. but than I am 70
when i was about 26 I went to a doctor to get a prescription, he done an examination
told me I was bleeding internally and would be dead in 6 months... I never went back.

there are some wonderful doctors out there, but most of them are in the business to pay for their fine cars
and large life style. NOT ALL of them, but most tell you 1/2 truths to keep you coming back

if we listen to our body, we can read where we hurt.
I do a lot of natural.

I was told I had osteo par. about 20 yrs ago, they did put me on a prescription.
about 6 months later, the prescription had closed my throat, I had to go to hospital
an dhave it stretched so I could swallow.
ran into a friend who said if I would put spearmint oil on my back it would cure.
I never took another prescription, have used spearmint oil on my back ever since, it never hurts
I am not bent over.
I order spearmint oil 25 ounces at a time and use it for everything.

it heals cold sores before they come up, heals any kind of sore, helps gums heal from infection [i did that too]
arthritis, rub it on, pain is gone.

when my hips hurt I use vaseline & spearmint oil. our bones get old & dry and most all prescriptions base is
poison and they all have side effects.

when you have a problem, go to web put in natural cure for "what ever" you will be amazed.
my son was in from Dallas, he owns a lock smith shop there. often gets in sun to open car doors.
recently has had some warts come up. looked on web for natural cures
it noted vaseline will keep them from coming in, rub lightly across back of neck
to cure, garlic, vitamin C, and a few other natural cures.

GOD gave us many cures, we have ignored and brainwashed that we can not do with out the 'doctor'
and often we can not, but more often we can.

When my daugher was about a old when she had gotten her 1st cold. It scared me so I took her to the walk-in clinic. Drs will to let it run it's course. My daughter had troubles breathing out of her nose so I let her sleep in her infant seat so her head was propped up so she can breath. Rubbed infant vicks on her chest & neck, and ran the vaporizor. I agree to see the childs pediatrician.

I saw his pediatrician and she told me that it was
Nonthing I can give him for and infant cold; because since
They have so many, recalls on children medicine, any thing
I give him could harm him and possibly kill him.  I am definetly
Not dumb enough to risk my son's life by giving him some oral medicine
That has been recalled, however, I will ask his doctor about the vapor rub
Because it sounds like a good idea.

Just getting caught up here in the Forum and saw this topic. I am a qualified medical professional, Nurse Practioner for almost 30 years, and I want to stress something:
Do NOT put Vicks on the chest, under the nose, or on the back of any child under the age of 2 years. It is far too strong and can cause a restriction of their tiny airways and also produce excessive mucus which is not something a baby, or small child, with a cold needs. As far as the feet and socks, I can't say if it works, but it is most likely NOT going to do any harm. A cool mist vaporizer is something every parent should own, honestly. They are also great for us as adults. I use one whenever I have a cold/congestion, and there are various things that can be safely added to the water in the tank to help with breathing and making you feel more comfortable.

You did the right thing by going to your pediatrician. There has been a rise in whooping cough outbreaks, due mainly to parents who are unwilling to immunize their children, and whooping cough can be deadly. Whenever a baby, small child is running a fever or having trouble breathing, it is always best to get them looked at by a doctor. What we think is 'just a cold' may not be. It's hard to be a parent and have all the responsibility for that little person, isn't it?! ;) But it's so worth it, a million times over, and I love to read things from great parents - not all are. nelisa20, I would like to know what your ped has to say about the Vicks if you do ask.

Aspirate the nostrils with a suction bulb as best as possible.  Humidifier(hot steamy shower). Just get some hot steam.  Call pediatrician.  A nurse can help on the phone with symptoms and tips.
