Swift Trucking company
« on: April 30, 2008, 11:01:12 pm »
Does anybody have any first-hand experience of Swift Trucking? ie - you, a close family member or friend works for them, did until recently, etc.

With the mortgage, and the rising cost of everything, we're just not making it anymore. Hubby's always wanted to go on the road, and after looking at different companies, decided to call Swift. He explained that he already has his CDLs, and they said he won't have to go through the school, that he'd jump right into training with a mentor.

He went online and filled out an application, so that part's done.  They said they won't have any openings until June, and will call him as soon as they have one. He's supposed to call back next week and see if they might have an early opening.

If anybody has any legitimate info to share, I'd appreciate it.  This is too big a jump (switching jobs) for me to let him do it without me researching as much as I can  ;)

TIA,
Kathy

My brother-in-law has been driving OTR for many years now and although he has worked for a few companies, local and nationwide, he has never worked for Swift.  Now, I'm not saying the company is bad, since my brother-in-law has never actually worked for them, but I know he did do some research on it, and remember, he's experienced.... but after researching the company, he found he wasn't very impressed with them.  He really does like CRST which he has been with for a few years now (second time around with CRST for him) and he is a Lead Driver and trains quite a few of the new drivers.

Once your husband has a year driving OTR, he could check out all the companies and see what the pay differential is for experienced drivers.

Its a rough life for someone with a family, but the money is very, very good, once he starts driving on his own.  I hope it all works out for you.

Welcome to the Forum, by the way.

Thanks Madd.  Everything I'd read about Swift was negative, which was giving me second thoughts. I showed him what you said, he laughed and said that the only good thing he's heard about them is that they're a good place to get your foot in the trucking door, and that after he's been driving a year or so, he plans to try to get on at another company. He said which one it was but I don't remember lol   Thanks for the info and the welcome, I appreciate it!  :dog: <--- the code says dog, but it looks like a cat to me!

Thanks Madd.  Everything I'd read about Swift was negative...

Hubby finally decided that he won't go with Swift except as a very last resort.  He tried CRST, but because of a fender-bender at work, they won't hire him for at least a year.  (The recycling trailer scraped the door of a pickup that was parked in a curve).  He talked to a recruiter at Covenant, put in an application, and should hear from the recruiter in the next couple of days.

Keeping my fingers crossed again.

Hi Madd - their answer was the same as all the others - because he has no OTR experience with a semi, he'd have to go through their school, which means more out-of-pocket $$ than we'd have.  He just got off the phone with Swift - they don't have his application on file (he filled it out 3 weeks ago), and said they have a hiring cap - nobody is going to be hired anytime soon.  :dontknow:  Thanks for asking! We'll just cross our fingers and hope, I guess.

Edit: Robbing Peter to pay Paul, and looking for Robin Hood to help out on finances  :P  If we can get hubby to school to get experience with a semi, he'll have a job with Werner.  Looking into schools and financing now
