First you'll probably need to decide if you prefer Window's base (PC) or Macintosh (Apple).  PC is a good general, all-around for the masses.  Macs tend to be superior for graphics/video editing - and does have a better operating system, but tend to be pricier.

Then you may want to decide on whether you want one of these "all-in-one" desktops or the traditional tower computer.  All-in-ones are desktops without the tower (kind of a hybrid between a desktop and a laptop).

I've been using Dell PCs (laptop and desktop) for quite a while and think on the whole, they are pretty stable.  I used to have a Gateway which was okay, but I felt the Dell was a little higher quality.  HP also makes some good desktop options you may want to explore.

i love the longevity of dell pcs (had my last one for almost 10yrs) but i also like the sleek styling and many features of my gateway. i prefer laptops to desktops because of the portabilty of them and also, inmy experience, they've lasted much longer than my desktop (only 3yrs)

I bought a new DELL in 2006 and stand behind them completely.  It has had very few problems and I would buy another DELL if I had it to do all over again.
