I think that kids rank pretty highly as negative cash flows!  $1500/year at public Schools, $1500/year club sports, $4,000/year for music lessons, $4000/year savings for college not to mention clothing/food/roof over their head. Pets get pretty expensive. I think that dating is cheaper with a larger quantity of fringe benefits but knowing that you have a loved one at home is priceless.
