Jackson Hewitt vs H&R Block
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:10:37 am »
I was just curious which one do any of you go with and which one is better? This is my 2nd time doing any taxes and I went with H&R Block the 1st time. Now, I'm going with Jackson Hewitt this time. Maybe, I should use Turbo Tax next time.

neither both of them are charging too much money for the same service any tax office do. they try to convince you that they get you a high tax return and it's not true.

I worked for J.H. when I was in college. I had absolutely NO training. Just an FYI...

You can do your return for free at TurboTax.com.

I've always used H&R Block, but our taxes are always complicated. I have tons of little jobs that I need to report income on, plus we have property in another state. Whenever we've tried doing it ourselves, it's been a nightmare.

Yeah, I'm gonna do something different next year. I just finished my taxes at Jackson Hewitt and I had the option to pay $92 out of pocket and I would get $275 in return. The next option was to let them handle all the fees and that will leave me with $133. So, I took the 1st option and paid the $92. I'm gonna try something else next year.

neither, both charge money and don't actually help you. Find a personal tax person who you can trust. I go to a independent tax person and he does a great job and I trust hiom.

H&R Block has a bad rep here In my town. I know when my ex did his taxes through them he only ended up with 300 dollars because they took the rest.

My boyfriend went with a place called Cooper tax service. They only charged him $90 to file and this year he's getting back more than last year ( $5,800 last year. $6,250 this year ).

I did mine online free through turbo tax,.you don't get it right away, but it didn't cost me a thing, only if you file the state through them. I will file this by itself

I wouldn't recommend either.  My feeling is that these companies are a major ripoff.  Doing taxes is like eating an elephant.  You have to do it one step at a time.  Do your own taxes and save the money these companies charge.  Do them line by line.  Read the directions like you  would if you were building something out of the box.  There are also programs out there that help people do their taxes at no charge.  Look for a VITA program in your community.  The Volunteer In Tax Assistance programs are for the elderly, military, low income families and are generally available in every town.  You pay a hard earned income for taxes, don't pay extra to have some company charge a ridiculous fee to do them for you.

I have been doing on online through H&R blocks for several years. I can do my for free and there are some that you can pay low amounts to do. But the cost is a lot less than actually going to them. They also back you up. It is so each to do and I can have my money with 10 business days.

We've been using H&R Block for a few years now, but one of their agents missed a decimal point when he was entering an amount we made, and we ended up having to come up with a large sum of money very quickly for the state.  H&R Block did pay the penalties, though, like they say they will.  I guess this type of mistake can happen with any company, but it is tough when it happens to you.
