SOTU
« on: January 25, 2011, 05:19:55 pm »
Who is pumped for tonight's State of the Union Address?  I've created this topic for everyone to have a place for discussion on any points Obama may or may not have raised, associated word vomit or praise, and complaints about the current state of our country.  Have fun... it starts in less than an hour...

BTW... what would you like to see Obama address?  It is purported that he will be addressing the economy and job creation/growth.  Anything else you'd like to see him address?

Here is the Transcript:  http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/State_of_the_Union/state-of-the-union-2011-full-transcript/story?id=12759395

I'd like to see him tender his resignation.

Very charismatic. Always amazing to hear a speech that well thought out. Though I do question his legitimacy on the topics and dates he brought up.

He's a fan of yours, too, Falc.  He said the Science Fair winners deserve hero status as much as the Superbowl winners.

I think in every SOTU, no matter who gives the address, there is something that everyone can agree with.  As much as I hated to admit it, I always thought W gave very charismatic addresses, even though I rarely agreed with him on policy.

Before I say too much about the content of the address, though, I like to go back and re-read the transcript.  This one was way too emotional for me.  I nearly cried with Boehner.

There were some things I really agreed with and some I was like WTF?

The biggest for me that I was actually kind of upset about and you guys may go "wow being petty" was how he jokingly talked about the TSA patdowns. Like it was nothing more than just a big joke and we shouldn't care. I really wish someone would ask him how he'd react if he didn't have his rockstar status and obviously not using public transportatation how he'd feel if a TSA agent did what they're doing to his own wife or daughters. I know it sounds petty when you really think about it and me even saying it aloud sounds kind of dumb that I'm upset about it, but I honestly am.

Uhm what else, I liked the science fair winner anecdote as well as getting rid of tax subsides for big oil. I liked how he talked of the stupid 1099 exception in the healthcare bill and his seemingly willingness to get it changed and get it right.

What I wished he would have brought up would have been things like actually having real spending cuts. Things like EPA, DOE, DOEdu, Defense, Bases around the world, cuts in these things.

All-in-all save the absolutely amazing speech he gave in Tuscon, this might have been his best yet.

But damn Boehner really you have to cry yet again? All the time? Seriously?

Obama intentionally tried to make him cry by bringing up the fact of his humble origins, though.

Best part of the speech, IMO.   :notworthy:

I had several issues with this SOTU, but the biggest issue I had was with semantics.  I was dumbfounded when Obama used the words "win the future" because all it triggers in me are images of people crawling over others in order to be the best.  I believe wholeheartedly that Americans value greed over common decency, and his statements about "winning the future" only solidify that viewpoint, IMO.  In fact, that quest for greed and the desire for "stuff" is what has our country in the situation it currently is in.

I wrote a very long note about it on facebook, although I haven't fully finished my diatribe on the SOTU (quite the essay, actually) and I decided not to post it due to its length.  If anyone is interested in reading it, though, I will more than happily copy/paste it.

Considering the healthcare reform is more about making insurance companies play more fairly, I don't see how this could benefit their current situation.
