More than 7,000 Facebook-associated crimes since January
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:55:24 pm »
IT IS EASY to forget that people can be watching you online.

After conducting an investigation, the Daily Mail reports that crimes associated with Facebook have risen by 700 per cent over the last three years. While this is undoubtedly a consequence of an increase in the website’s use – 500 million people now use Facebook – it is not always an unavoidable consequence,,

WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT FACEBOOK? IS THIS SAFE..

My New Years resolution is to spend less time on Facebook or maybe even delete it altogether. All the predators, hackers, viruses, etc etc not worth it!

All you have to do is be smart enough not to put up any information that you don't want out there. Don't say where you are all the time, don't tell everyone when you're going on vacation, etc.

That has little to do with it.  The site is getting hacked.  Just like a bank with all your private information can get hacked.  It happened to me with Bank of America.  It was in the papers.  Hackers hacked into the main database of Bank of America and randomly threw a program out there that snagged some peoples private information.  I was a lucky one.  They got everything, SSI number, mothers maiden name, etc, etc.  It's been a nightmare ever since.

Tonight, I got a surprise again.  Someone got my bank card number and charged $200 at a jewelry store in Illinois (I live in California).  Thing is, I'm with another bank with a totally different checking and bank card.  I think someone maybe transposed a number or something and I got hit with the charge.  Already filed a fraud complaint with my bank, and they'll take care of it.  Thing is, it could take them 10 business days to get it cleared up.  Good thing I went grocery shopping on Saturday and stocked up all the food I would need to take me through to the New Year.  Had to call a couple people and have them hold their checks until this gets cleared up.....kinda embarrassing.

You can do all the right things and still get slammed.  It's a crap shoot sometimes.

I have never had anything happen to me yet and hope it stays that way. I only use Facebook to stay in touch with relatives and friends though. I was on myspace before but deleted that a couple years ago.

OMG that is so scary...I'm actually glad you shared this because it's something we all need to remember! I remember when Facebook became popular I was iffy about it to say the least because on other sites you don't really have to put your last name but on Facebook, well...Ya pretty much do...I don't like people knowing all of my business! I even lie about where I live and I never write where I work or anything! Too many creepers out there! I also need to be careful about how much I b*tch and moan because you neverrrr know whose watching. :P

I don't put anything on Facebook that would let them know what I am doing or when I am home or when I am leaving.  No telling who might be ready to break into your house when you are away.
