Depression involves the body, mood, and thoughts, that affects the way a person eats and sleeps, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be wished away. People with a depressive disease cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Some people say it's a spirital matter... The soul illness...
What's your opinion and how can a depressive person get better?

Thanks,

God Bless all!

I have suffered from clinical depression all my life.  However, the adult symptoms of depression began to take over my life when I started college back in 1972.  The best way I could describe what I went through for the next 35 years was a constant, and I do me constant, feeling of despair.  Now the intensity would vary, from very little to extremely intense despair depending on the situation.  Environmental issues or stressors sparked the symptoms. Through years of talk therapy and the right medication, I have been completely symptom free since 2007.  But I'll always have it.  If I'm off my meds for more than 2 days, I''ll start feeling the symptoms again. ;)

I have depression  I have been on meds since April of 2007 since my oldest son, TeJay, was killed in a car accident.  I also have to take it every day or else I have a complete nervous breakdown. :crybaby2:

Thanks to all of you for sharing your experience with me. I'm consedering taking medication too... In my case, I think I'm depressed because I moved to another  country  with my husband and only see my family once a year, left my career behind and I'm now also unemployed, but there is one thing we cannot lose... faith
I believe God has a time for everything...

God Bless all

I didn't treat it and I kind of just came out of it.  It helps to be active and to build relationships with people (get a job, join cubs, etc. so that life seems more meaningful than the four walls enveloping you in darkness).  But, even though I say I've come out, the feelings from that time still linger.  It's like a wound. It takes forever to heal and it leaves a scar that at times is always there as a reminder while other times it's invisible like it was never even there.

I have talked about this before. It is not as simple as this but it's a start. Turn off the TV. Get outside. Do some reading up on nutrition and how the foods you eat effect your brain. You might be surprised. Try to cut sugar out of your diet as much as possible and read about pau d arco tea. It has helped me. I refuse to take antidepressants.

Every human being is not immuned to depression. Whenever I become depressed, I do not take medication (antidepressants), drugs, alcohol, nor sleeping pills to get over my problem. One can become easily addicted to them because intoxicants control the brain. I meditate to calm my mind to release the negative energy. Some outdoor exercise and some fresh air will also benefit you tremendously to release the stress. It doesn’t have to be rigorous. Walking is the least expensive and least demanding form of exercise there is. Your body is your temple and in it God dwells within you. :peace:  Please take good care of yourself and avoid taking intoxicants of any kind. :angel11:

I have chemical depression. I am missing the genes that help to make seratonin. I have been on ssri's for almost 20 years.
Currently I am on Celexa and trazodone. Works ok, for me. I also have panic attacks and agorophobia. I fight it everyday. I still go out and do what I have to do. It is just a little harder for me. Without the meds, life isn't worth bothering with.

I struggle with a number of different things, including depression. The toughest part is not having the proper treatments accessible, so if you do Take Advantage Of It And Get The Help You Need Now, Before Things Get Any Worse.

I try to cope with my issues every minute of every day, and a lot of times I lose that battle, but I can't let myself give up on the war. If you have creative outlets, such as drawing or painting, those can be a form of therapy. I haven't got artistic abilities really, but I still try at times. Music is usually where I turn to help get my mind into a better state, I just put the head phones on & turn up the volume.

Hope things get better for you.

I have been depressed ever since I first started high school.. it felt like everything went wrong at that time.

I refused to go to school and ended up dropping out, but within two weeks I was enrolled in a online private school, or "home schooling." I was also at a mental institution for a few weeks as an out-patient and had group sessions with other kids. That hospital prescribed Lexapro for me and I had been taking it for two years, and just recently I quit taking them. I also quit smoking.

To all those people who are depressed and don't know what to do, shouldn't completely disregard therapy and medication because it does help to an extent. Eventually though, you have to help yourself. You have to want to get better and get other things on your mind, start being more productive and stop caring so much about what people think. That's what helped me. :)

It's hard, and there were times when I felt like completely giving up, but I'm doing better now, and I hope that everyone who is depressed finds their way and gets better. xx
