I disagree strongly with polygamy.  Marriage is between one man and one woman.

I think that show is simply a sign of the times we're living in. God intended for one man to have one woman. That's it!

Yeah this is pretty much the overall opinion I keep hearing.

This is as naive as it is ethnocentric. There's a big world out there. Just because your beliefs don't match others does not mean that yours are universal and everyone should obey them. Polygamy has been around for a loooong time. Even in your holy texts.

It still doesn't make it right.

Many people believe that what is right isn't always universal.  Yes, murder is bad, but polygamy?  It just squicks me out, but in polyamorous relationships, they are fine tuned and each person delivers something unique to the relationship, and it seems to work for them.  Personally I believe that relationships ideally work best between two committed individuals, but that isn't the universal viewpoint, just the popular one.  Many committed two-person relationships are also "open" relationships, where the people have fine tuned the option of being with someone who isn't one of the two original partners in the relationship.  It isn't something that works for me, and although I think what they are doing is wrong for me, I won't tell them that they are living their lives wrong.  The main issue I see with polygamy, though, is that it isn't an equal partnership in cases like the tv show that started this thread.  Any relationship that isn't an equal partnership is definitely wrong...period.

Thank you, Amy. Well put! I'm glad you acknowledged the tv show aspect of it. What could anyone else expect out of some random tv show? The whole story? The whole truth? Not going to happen. People feed on watching drama. That's how you get views. And those viewers watch commercials. Which = $$$. They're always going to spice it up to the point where you're usually watching an act.

Yes it does. You're sunscribing to a mindset that is trained to think inside our western cultures norms and limitations. If you want a very basic example of what's going on here, let's say we have 50 people who like PB sandwiches. 3 of those people like PB AND J on their sandwich. Therefore because the other 47 don't like jelly on their sandwich, those other three are automatically wrong in whatever stance they take as to why they like eating pbj. "It's gross to us and they shouldn't eat it! Who would eat such a thing!?". Those 47 just don't have the reasoning skills to understand why those 3 could like jelly; why that combination works for those 3.

When did polygamy become legal and right?  I realize it's a tv show being discussed, but there are a lot of views on here that would apparently stand outside of the tv show. I also know it went on in the Old Testament, but was discouraged in the New Testament.  This generation of today are so open on things that are not right and/or legal, but they rationalize it to make it seem and appear right.  And the tv people use this to their advantage to say it's "okay to do what you want."

Ask the mormons! lol...culture changes. What was right back then isn't right now. You can say the same statement with the word "wrong" too. It can switch pretty fast in a historical sense. What you deem "right" may not have been in the past nor may not be in the future. The obvious solution is to analyze the situation as best as possible and determine if the pros outweight the cons. Then it either becomes a norm or a law depending on several aspects. I don't really support the practice of polygamy, but if it works for people all over the world, whatever. It's just an opinion. I'm not in the position to say that they can't eat their pbj. And I'd be a completely naive *bleep* to tell them otherwise if their relationships work.

Yes. An example being marijuana. There's nothing wrong with doing what I quoted here unless it harms an individual. This isn't some massive conundrum though. Like Amy said, it's just what's most popular.

Most people can't get it right; thanks to the misguiding of the media.
I agree to polyamory. Why try to control love?

I also agree it is a choice as is any thing in life. Personally I am stingy when it comes to my man. I dont want to have to share his attention with another. Some women and men out their do not have this problem. To some It is better to know who your man is with than to find out later he cheated on you with so and so and they had this illness.

I'm not too fond of the idea of Polygamy.  I mean it'd be kinda awkward knowing that your husband has relations with so many other women. I'd be so jealous.  In this country, we call that cheating.  In others, it's the accepted way of life and we shouldn't judge it.
