Do you think Obama should extend the Bush tax cuts?
« on: October 07, 2010, 03:32:49 pm »
I'm currently doing a project about this and I have to go for or against.  I am going against because I believe the taxes should continue the way they are with the wealthy paying a large portion of taxes than low- and moderate-income families.  However, there are definitely good arguments for each side.

My advice would be to do a lot of research. Make sure you use a variety of different sources. Do NOT believe everything you hear in the news. Much of the pro-Obama talk is so skewed you will get the idea that the Bush Tax Cuts were something they aren't and had no positive effects. This is not to say that republican news doesn't skew their reports as well. I'll be upfront, I'm a Republican- so I'm probably a bit biased as well. I can keep an open mind and study things for what they are, but my views are very republican and conservative no matter how much research I do. I think with a little research you'll learn that what you hear about the Bush Tax Cuts is probably far from what they really were. You have to remember they were implemented to help stop a recession, soon after they were put in place 9/11 happened, and that they actually increased the percentage of taxes that the wealthy pay. Obama's response to the recession was a stimulus plan(spending more money while we are in debt with temporary government programs)- he put us in more debt AND tried giving the government more control(socialism). 9/11 altered the effects of the tax cuts(a terrorist attack effects the economy). Also, Obama's socialist initiative will leave the wealthy more well off if we do not fight back, while Bush was increasing the percentage of income taxes they paid to help out the middle/lower class. It is a common trend that democrats increase taxes for us regular folks taking more of our income and not affecting the wealthy class as much (a large reason why you'll see many wealthy people like celebrities and such are democrats). Not looking to get into a political argument- just giving ya a few points that may help.

For the middle and lower classes- yes.
For those making over $250,000- no.

The top 1% of people in this country own something like 24% of the wealth.  Tax the hell out of them.
