Hemp is used for almost all of those things, but is not widely used for many reasons. Cost, addiction, and obviously not a good material to be used where fire can get too. Not to mention there are alot of people that don't want to be associated with it no matter what it is used for.
Is it a subsitute to other materials...yeah, is it a smart subsitute...NO.
First, it's free to grow plants, second, it's not addictive, third, people are only opposed to it because of manipulton.
If you want proof, i'll post an entire report on it.

I can agree, and i understand that. but it would be an excellent replacement for the tobacco industry's "sacred" tobacco.

The Truth About “Marijuana”
And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land.-- Ezekiel 34:29

The reason the word marijuana is in quotes in the title is because that’s not the proper term. It is a Mexican nickname for hemp or cannabis. Why is a plant classified as a drug/narcotic? And why is it illegal in the U.S.? I hope that the “harmful to your health” routine isn’t the case, because tobacco is legal. And so is liquor. And so are “TV Drugs”. This all comes from misinformation and manipulation of the general public. Did you know that, George Washington, yeah, that George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin grew hemp? Thomas Jefferson claims he had the best of his days "smoking hemp, and watching as far as my eyes could see".
Hemp can be used as paper, fuel, housing, clothing, oil, even food and that’s not the end of the list. Hemp has a short grow season and can be grown anywhere. In the 1930’s the Hemp industry could have created millions of jobs and multiple variations of quality products. If you had a pair of jeans made from hemp, you could hand those down to your great grand-kids. In Kentucky, once the number one hemp producer (producing 40,000 tons in 1850 according to state archives), hemp jeans are illegal! It’s illegal to wear quality jeans. Today hemp oil could be used for BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC that won’t harm the environment. If it had not been illegalized, it could have saved us from the great depression. And could steer us off of the road to destroying the earth. Hemp has so many medical uses and can be safely recreational. It can cure an eating disorder (“the munchies” ring a bell?). Recreational use brings a sense of creativity, appreciation of all arts, and brings one closer to nature. Of course, problems occur with youth using marijuana and performance in school, but that’s only because 14 and 15 year old kids don’t understand the nature and concept of marijuana, and it’s because they aren’t taught.
But how did it become illegal and why? Well, it became illegal through many processes including media-manipulation of the people. Films like “REEFER MADNESS” and “MARIHUANA: THE DEVIL’S WEED” came out in 1936 to gain public support to illegalize it. Things like, violent narcotic, incurable insanity and soul destroying were used to describe cannabis. At the end of “REEFER MADNESS” it doesn’t say “the end“, it says “TELL YOUR CHILDREN”. People in the 1930’s were so easily led and dared not to question authority figures, so they told their children, and they told their children, and so on. So today most people think that hemp is a narcotic or drug, when in all truth it is a harmless plant. They called it violent and metal-illness inducing. The most useful crop known to man had became a drug and the earth has been hurting ever since. But why? Simple, it is yet another case of profits before people. If Hemp remained legal, so many billion dollar industries would be reduced. It was a threat to their wealth, and greed overcame.
On April 14, 1937, the Prohibitive Marihuana Tax Law was brought directly to the House Ways and Means Committee, the only committee that can introduce a bill without debate. The chairman, Robert Doughton, a Dupont supporter, ensured that the bill would pass Congress. Doctor James Woodward testified too late on the behalf of the AMA. He said that it hadn’t been done sooner because they just discovered that “Marihuana” was hemp. The AMA understood hemp as a quality medical product for over a hundred years, including uses for asthma and glaucoma. First claimed as a violent inducing drug, in the 1950’s, Harry J. Anslinger, Head of the Drug Commission for 31 years, said the complete opposite “marihuana will pacify you so much, you’re soldiers won’t want to fight.”
Several of the world’s problems could be solved if hemp were industrialized. It is certainly, the most useful and versatile plant we know of.  Abolish the term “Marijuana”, and know the history that the term came from and why it is the way it is today. Marijuana is the plant mentioned in the bible as the plant of renown for the healing of nations. So why does it remain outlawed?

~The Bible predicts some herb's prohibition. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall … speak lies in hypocrisy … commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. (Paul: 1 Timothy 4:1-3)

The Bible speaks of a special plant. "I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more." (Ezekiel 34:29) A healing plant. On either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare 12 manner of fruits, and yielding her fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (Revelations 22:1-2) A gift from God.

Cannabis was used 12 ways: clothing, paper, cord, sails, fishnet, oil, sealant, incense, food, and in ceremony, relaxation and medicine. For so the Lord said unto me, "I will take my rest and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs. For afore harvest, when the bud is perfect and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks and take away and cut down the branches." (Isaiah 18:4-5)~

Do not legalize marijuana!  I do not want my kid hanging around other 13 year olds who are smoking pot at lunch time in the school.  It is a proven statistic that most crimes, are committed by people who are on some hard type of drugs.  This includes alcohol, but not to the same extent.  Once you legalize marijuna, what's next?  Cocaine, Hydrocodone, heroin, morphine, estacy, etc...  There must be a stop point somewhere.  I truly believe that if you open the doors to legalizing marijuna, next come the worse type of drugs.  Prohibition did not stop people from drinking, so I have to admitt that it will not stop the use of illegal drugs.

Although I agree hemp could and is used for many things, this is done already, it carries such a stigmatism not many people grasp the effects it could have on us, and the argument on leaglizing marijuana is not for the properties it has as a resourse but as a mind altering drug, my theory is that once legalized just like alcohol , there will be the same issues as ever before some people are responsible drinkers and don't drive and don't get stupid, but others must go too far and don't control themselves, driving to slow or not knowing where you're at is just as dangerous as driving to hard and fast, all in all it won't change much just add to our already stiff laws, and break downs in society, and the goverment will tax high cause they lose the profit they are making on it being illlegal, don't be nieve and think that they aren't making money on it already hush hush!!! though :icon_rr:

Many people are talking about the benefits to the economy if it were legalized.  But is this something that you reallly want to smell as you walk outside in front of your house or have your kids around?   I guess there would need to be some limitations on where it can be used, perhaps?

It should be legalized.  It'd do wonders for our economy.  We could put a large tax on it and mint money.  Also gang violence would decrease because marjuana would be legal.  It's a total win-win.  the only bad thing is the health risk it poses, but cigarettes and alcohol are bad for you  too and they're legal.

I don't think it should be legal or illegal.  As someone posted earlier, it is a plant.  How do you legalize something that comes from the ground. If it comes from the earth it should be good for you. huh  Maybe we should look at it like a vegtable or like spinach is to popeye.....just sayin

Well then, why not just legalize the growing of Papaver somniferum here also? For those who don't know, that is the latin name for the Opium poppy. Then people could just extract and make their own opium, morphine - of course then convert that morphine to heroin, codeine, and a whole lot of other drugs. Hey, it's a very pretty plant and a real money maker too. It is what financed the Taliban in Afghanistan. It was an Opium poppy field that put Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion out of commission on their way to the Emerald City in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, so it can't be all bad, right?

I know the comparison is not on par between the 2 plants, but the "god put it here" argument really does not hold up as a standard to go by IMO. It could open a lot more doors if legalized and some of those doors need to stay closed.

Well the opium poppy ha medicinal purposes. it's not as versatile as hemp, but it's very useful medically. Cocaine comes from a plant. We should use more herbal remedies for treatments instead of things that have worse side effects than what they cure. those plants were put here by god for different purposes. If you misuse god's gifts, there are consequences - addiction, etc...

NO!...Marijuana shouldn't be legalized, cause it not only impairs judgment, but DRIVING as well...We have enough drunk drivers and people texting/talking on cell phones while driving. We don't need more dangerous people on the roads to kill us. Can you imagine the consequences!?...There would be urban jungles of weed plants growing out of backyards and people walking around like zombies and crashing into things all day long...The convenience stores would make a killing though from all the Pot-Heads buying Cheetos and chips because of weed induced munches. So NO! Are society is already going to hell, we don't need more degeneration.
