Clipping Cat Nails
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:05:04 am »
I don't want to get my cat declawed because it's too expensive (and for you animal lovers, I'll say because it's mean as well so I don't get that lecture).  Any tips for me on how not to get clawed to death in the process?  I'm using cat nail clippers from Walmart...

Good Luck with that one.

Some cats are just easier than others.  As any cat owner
knows .. they each have their own distinct personality.
(I have 4 -- and they are all different in their own way even
though they are 2 sisters (12yrs old -- and a brother & sister - 1yr old)

Have you considered taking them to a groomer to be cut?
Try one of the pet stores (like petco).   They would probably
be cheaper than a regular groomer.   You could ask your vet
as well to recommend a groomer that does this.

I take both of my dogs to the groomer to cut their nails.
The $8.50 once a month is definitely worth not fighting
with them to do it myself.

You need two people to do it. My husband and I are pro's at this! He puts the cat in kind of a loose headlock (no, it doesn't hurt it) and then I do the clipping.

Haha - okay, but I had to beg my boyfriend for a year to even get a cat so I don't know if he will want to be any part of this.  I'll just tell him if he wants to save his furniture, he'd better help.

Yeah, I got those scissor kind and yeah I also bought treats that I plan to give my kitty only when she's done getting her nails clipped.  Does just clipping do well for the prevention of shredded furniture?  I mean, I plan on using a squirt bottle to teach her no scratching furniture, but if she does maybe with clipped nails the damage will be less?

I would let my vet do it if my cat was too hard to manage. :cat:
