Support Law!!!
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:42:25 am »
Do you support the Law against using cell phones while driving?  I do I think its very dumb to be texting while driving.   I see so many sitting trying to drive, text, smoke, and sometimes try to eat while trying to stay in there own lane.  What and how do you feel about this.   :cat:

Texting while you drive is just plain stupid, irresponsible and ludacris!! I will stick with my blue tooth, both hands on the wheel and still able to talk.

I do NOT support those laws... As the OP stated, the problem is not exclusively with cell phones, but with distracted driving in general. I've seen a mother swerving on the highway cuz she was busy yelling at her kids in the back seat. The correct law should be against distracted driving in any form. However, there needs to be more discretion as to what is considered distracted. Passengers can be a distraction (and can sometimes be worse than a phone because we are in a habit of looking at the person that we're talking to), but I don't think they should outlaw passengers. Conversely, in some situations, cell phones may not be as much of a distraction for a person, esp. if they try to minimize the distraction by using bluetooth or other hands-off methods (in some states (and I think my home state of MN is thinking of this) there are laws that ban cell phones in any form -- even if the person is using bluetooth!  :BangHead: ). Instead of making some law that just bans something for its potential for being a distraction, the laws should be made more open to interpretation by the police so that it is only illegal if the person is obviously being distracted by something. A person that talks on a cell phone, but still is very aware of their surroundings is fine, but a person that keeps turning towards the passenger to talk with them should be arrested. A person eating a sandwich in one hand but still maintaining proper control of the steering wheel with the other hand is fine, but the person that juggles the wheel and a bag of potato chips in one hand while picking out the chips with the other hand should be pulled over.

I don't care for that law but it has some points.  Some people (me) can't multitask. Texting & driving is hard for me without the car veering off the road. I also understand that if you are going to put a law such as no using the cell phone to text while driving then there should be a law against other distractions. Such as: No, putting make- up on while driving, no, fiddling with the radio/cd  knobs/buttons while driving, no trying to control your kids/pets in back seat while driving, no eating, drinking, smoking while driving,no sex while driving,no,singing while driving,no talking while driving, no fighting with the spouse while driving,no screaming babies while driving....etc...etc...etc...

I think it's common sense that you(in general) shouldn't talk on the phone, text, eat, or drink while driving. I mean if you're going to talk on the phone, use a hands free set or if you don't have a hands free set then pull over and talk. People who do that continually put their lives and others live in danger. They don't realize that until their car is smashed under a truck or flipped over on the road because they were not paying attention to the road. We only live once and I'd like to trust other drivers on the road but I feel like I have to be on my guard all the time. Whatever happened to just driving the speed limit and leaving about two car distances in between each car. But now everyone wants to tailgate. Sorry I went off on a whole tangent there but yeah I don't mind the cell phone law at all. Especially, because I never use the cell phone while driving anyway.

Just to clarify when I use the word "you" I mean everyone in general. I know it sounds like I'm directing it towards one person but it's not like that.

I think they need to keep making laws like this so people will be more responsible.
