Can Anyone Give Me a Sure Fire Way to Pick a Good Watermelon?
« on: August 14, 2010, 06:06:02 pm »
I've heard so many different ways from "thumping" them to looking for bee sting "sugar holes".  To me it's just hit or miss.  I've tried all the......actually guessing ways, but does someone really know how to pick a good one? ???

I heard when you thump the watermelon, listen and look for the ones that sound "hollow."

lol, yeah i heard the same thing thump it. Try this, i know this may sound strange but take a straw broom just one straw from it place it on top of the watermelon if it turns all away around it suppose to be sweet. Now i did try this and it was not bad.

Okay here's the rules...

1. good watermelons have seed's, (stay away from seedless).

2. Feel for the heaviest watermelon, for its size.

3. look at the end where the vine grows into the melon,  look for any kind of mold,

4. sniff the end where the vine connects, another way to detect mold... sniff for freshness...

Buy watermelon from the state of georgia. I was raised there and the watermelons were all ways riped when they are picked for market.

I'll look for Georgia Watermelons at my grocer.

YES!! I grow them !!Thump them with your finger, and if they sound hollow, they are ripe. Also, the more yellow they are, where they were laying on the ground is a good indecator,, you don't want to choose one that is real white on the bottom, that means they aren't ripe yet.

I have always followed the "thump" them for the hollow sound and that has worked for me.

The best way to do it for me is have my husband do it. He's pretty good at it.

I also agree with thumping technique and you can see that there should be small part in white colour(not at base) and rest of it in green with stripes. So that it is over ripe.

This is a new way to check on the ripeness I will have to check that out, I have had good luck with seedless ones also maybe because I usually do not buy a whole one and I can see if it is ripe

I have the same problem too. Some watermelons I pick are too soft inside.
