This reminds me of a story my communications instructor told our class.  She went to a concert and did not have the cash on her to buy a snack.  She said she was really hungry.  A little girl dropped a bag of hot, cinnamon roasted almonds on the floor.  Her parents took her to buy another bag and my instructor scooped all of her almonds up and ate them!  This story really disgusted most of the class but I found it hilarious!  It just showed me how down to earth my instructor was.  I really enjoyed her class.  I still keep in contact with her on Facebook.

Depends on two very important things: 1. Where it landed and 2. What it is. If it's something wet or sticky where dirt / debris will stick to it as soon as it lands on the floor, it's getting in the garbage. If it's something with a hard coating or something I can just brush off, psh, I'll go ahead and eat it. Anything that drops outside will be instantly thrown away.

A little dirt usually won't hurt anyone.

The five second rule is extrememly dependent on how hungry I am.

I agree on Where it landed and What it's made of that many have been saying. Also, if it is something that needs to be cooked, then I'll use it; washing will get off the macro dirt and the cooking will get rid of the microbe germs.

Here's an interesting corollary: If you find a $20 bill buried under a pile of dog poo, do you pick it up?  :dog:

For me, I'd probably try to find a napkin or plastic baggy to push away the poop and scoop up the $20. Still would be major ish!

No, there could be millions of bacteria on wherever your food lands.

As my grandma said "A little dirt don't hurt put it in your mouth and let it work".  Depends what it falls in and what has been in the area., or how long its been since last cleaned.  Otherwise just a little more protien.   :D   ;)

well, that depends on what it is and where exactly it fell!!! ha ha
That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into in the first place.

I believe that it wont hurt to eat a little bit of dirt. In the south some women that are pregnate eat dirt as a craving.

I don't believe in the 5-second rule, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the floors at my job.

I read an article about it and even though sometimes I still go by the rule, they say you shouldn't.  Studies show it picks up germs the second the item hits the floor.
