If you have the time, I think a dog.  If you aren't home a lot, maybe a cat or something that doesn't require as much attention like a chinchilla or a ferret or something.  I had iguanas for a long time, too-those were pretty cool, but they have a lot of needs so you'd have to read up on them before you get one.

I'd like to say my cat doesn't crave attention, lol.  He goes bonkers when I even walk outside!  And he's never happy unless my husband and I are sitting in the living room.  With him.  I think he thinks he's a dog!
