SSN offers
« on: April 24, 2010, 04:42:32 pm »
Don't you guys find offers that ask for your social security number ridiculous? Our social security number is supposed to kept secret cause it's basically what makes our identity. Why do they need it anyways? Can't they steal your identity if they know your name, address and ssn?  :sad1:

This offer should be ignored immediately because it's asking everyone to give out their SS numbers to some random strange site. Better yet, this offer should be removed.

What offers ask for your social security number?  And I agree with you and the others:  do not ever give out your social security number to anyone or group except when you know the person or group such as an employer, IRS, bank, health care providers etc. etc. etc.

They use it to validate your identity, and probably don't even store it (I don't know for sure, but it's standard practice to put sensitive data like that in memory for a moment or two while your data is validated, and then discard it).  Like all offers on here, it's not for everybody.  But a lot of people have completed the offer already.

Also, credit report offers and the AccountNow offers (and probably others) also require an SSN, but nobody's complained about it...why the double standard?

well if we were allowed to put in fake information I wouldn't complain...I mean...there is a lot of identity theft in America as it is and I just don't think handing out your SSN to random sites is not the safest thing to do. I'd say only give your SSN to Banks and your Boss/Employer.

Well my identity can't get anyone a loan or any kind of credit....  LOL.  But anyway I'd research the site before handing over my SSN to them, doesn't necessarily mean it's dangerous though!

I'm sure there are many of these and are not necessary dangerous. Still, I'd rather stay away from these offers, personal preference. I'd rather prevent than regret :]
