I guess it depends on what kind of food it is. My grandma just cleaned her refrigerator because she had things in there that dated 2005 that she never used. Yuck, Gross!  :P

and other related responses:

Well, you know,  when things look like...I don't want to see anything in my fridge that looks like it would make me puke.  If it gets to that point, the container and all its content go straight to the garbage.  I would hate to come face-to-face with something in my fridge that looks like it could attack me!

I guess you can keep it in there as long as you want to but I wouldn't eat it. Just joking..when I worked in the nursing home we couldn't keep anything (leftovers) more than 3 days so I still stick to that.

I hope you don't put the canned vegi's in the refridgerator, don't put any cans in the fridgerator, this can make you sick.
Just an after thought, probably didn't mean it that way, but I have seen people do this, with different things, and it is not healthy.

I don't know where those numbers cam from but i know that there is experation dates on items but usually they can last longer than that. for instance, milk usually has about a week and a half to two weeks from the experation date when you buy it in the store, but usually you can go a week past the date. From my understanding the date are regulations for the store so that they can not be on the shelves past that date.
