Is the world coming to an end?  or Will the world end in 2012?   UGH! Here we go again! Remember the Y2K scare?  Well, supposedly the world was going to end because of some computer glitch.  The world was suppose to end several times in the last decade and probably since the beginning of time.  Eventually the world will end for those who happen to die in lets say 2012.  I'm just saying! That's all!

Ah great...I guess I'll try to wrap this one up quick before the religious zealots go nuts with their reasonings. The answer is simply no. Technology has evolved so well that we are capable of hearing news of a disaster within minutes. Because we're now so well connected around the world, we know exactly what's going on. We have so many trained specialists on these matters that it's impressive how much we know about our planet now. Simply put, more seems to be happening because we are tracking everything by-the-minute on this globe. It has always been like this, just without the tech in the past.
Example-
If you were to live 100 years ago on some farm in Alabama and a devastating earthquake hit some rural part of China, chances are you and the rest of Alabama would never hear of it happening in your lifetime.

Even studying hot-zones of earthquakes and disasters in general has remained at a steady pace throughout human history. Once in a while you'll get a huge one though. But that's our world for ya! So don't worry. We're doing pretty good in the grand scheme of things. Don't let these vague apocalyptic stories like the Mayan calender scare you-- keep it real. I suppose someday it will.  Bet the dinos wondered too.  Not anytime soon though.  Hey, spring is here and the world is renewing itself just like always.  Sure, there are earthquakes and volcanos, but there always have been.  Some years there are more and some less.  Hey, in the very early 1800's there was even a major major earthquake in Ohio that totally changed the landscape and the world did not end.  Amen.

I'm unaware of why it's a bad argument. Could you explain more in depth? I never said technology is stopping earthquakes if that's how you read it Pretty much since we're connected, we hear a lot more of what's going on in the world compared to 100+ years ago when we barely knew what was happening outside of the US. Simply put, our scope was really limited on the world. That's why we're hearing about all these earthquakes now-- up-to-the-minute sources around the world. It's just awful that they've hit urbanized areas lately. Poor people

The realistic scenario here is earthquakes.  We can prepare for them as best we can, but we can't stop them.  That's my point. Being prepared for natural disasters is one thing, sitting around worrying about the world coming to an end is another.  Certain things are beyond our control.

You're right...sorry for not going further into detail on my part. Most NDisasters are unavoidable, but atleast we can prepare for them so we aren't stipped of our infrastructure and forced into extinction. We can aid eachother incase it happens also due to our tech. I studied desertification and weak-insecticide products a while ago and it scares me a lot more than most major Ndisasters do (one could argue that these 2 are controllable disasters). To think we'll have massive food-shortages around the globe if we can't spread the information on how to stop it. It's all about getting the info around so we can continue thriving.

Sometimes humanity really does remind me of a virus, reproducing and destroying as we go along.  There are only 2 outcomes I can think of in that scenario.  The host kills the virus or the virus kills the host.  Either way, the virus ends up dead.  Translation: The earth kills us or we kill the earth, and thus kill ourselves.  The good news is if we die out, there won't be any more Twilight movies. That almost makes it worth it for me.

I've seen it once...I thought it was a little exhaggerated in every aspect. Critics say it was awful-- reviews were generally bad. I see the first episode was a record-breaker for TruTV when it came to views but I imagine the show just crumbled afterwards....unless...THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT US TO THINK!

I'm under the impression that we are slowly starting to hit our stationary phase. However since we have the ability to actually control ourselves, I believe we have the ability to stop extinction. It's all about responsibility. Even though our past shows different, I hope we can get over ourselves and try to fix potential outcomes rather than capitalize on them like so many do (ie "omg earthquakes! It's never been like this before! The world is ending!"). The key here --and to everything in this subject matter-- is being aware and working to fix it. It's either that or die out like they would have in the movie "Idiocracy".

Also let me clear something up for you. Atheists don't believe that they know everything, 32 years on this planet, and  I know that I certainly don't. We are just not bound by one single ideal or god to follow....We are individualistic, a human-plethora of ideas and truths based in the realities of life.

We don't have Atheist meetings. We don't tell people that if they are not an Atheist, that they are going down. But we do recognize the fallicies in the bible and the "too good to be true" mentality that religious folk tend to talk about alot, and that is just not for us.

What's this called? Segregation. It works in different ways than just racism, you know. It does not matter what peoples backgrounds are when it comes to something as trivial as religion. The fact that you favor and believe you should help out a specific people rather than help out anyone in desperate need in a given disasterous situation says a lot about yourself and your beliefs. Unless the victim is planning to kill you, this is unacceptable behavior and is nonprogressive at all.

I still need to see Idiocracy.  In any case, I agree we shouldn't immediately start screaming about the world ending.  In other news, airlines are resuming flights today for the people stranded due to the volcanic ash cloud.  I like their take on it. "Well, none of our test flights crashed so you guys should be OK too."  Yeah....

If you're religious and now the book of revelations says then I think you would agree we are probably being given signs and perhaps warnings that it is.  I think that we should all step back take a look at the big picture and realize that all that's going on with the earthquakes and volcanoes are direct results of our own doings as far as depleting the ozone and polution etc.  Who knows I gues when it happens it happens its enevitable if you believe the Bible.
