Doctor Assisted Suicide, Anyone?????
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:20:14 am »
I think it is a great idea, but there would have to be laws that govern it so it doesn't get out of control. If a person is of sound mind and body, and they can clearly make the decision to do it, to not live in pain or be on numerous amounts of pain meds or the rest of their lives, or for whatever reason(it has to be a legit medical reason, ie terminal illness, unbearable pain, a diagnosable ailment, not just those who want to commit suicide because they "just can't take it anymore" )........ I say go for it!

Not to make light of the subject, but I read this title and thought to myself, "Not today, but if you would have asked me yesterday I would have said, Oh me, pick me, please!"  I swear, I had the worse day in the world yesterday.  Which leads me to my vote on this subject.  I vote no, just for that reason.  People do change their minds.

I know suffering that some people go through is unimaginable to me, but as a Christian, I just don't believe that it is our decision as to when to end our lives.  I will never understand why good people are made to suffer, but walking in faith is all about following your teachings even sometimes when you don't understand.  I often tell my son to please every once in a while just do what I ask you to without always having to know why I told you to do it.  I think it is the same for us.  However, I understand why watching someone you love suffer would certainly make you wonder how a loving God could cause such pain.

I feel that we should be allowed to make the decision to end our lives if we have a medical reason to do so. I know that if I had a dibilitating disease that would prevent me from caring for myself, I certainly would not want to continue to live. I am an independant person and do not want to rely on others for my daily needs. I do not think the government should interefere in matters such as these. They should be discussed among family and a decision made. Each case is different, yet the government treats anyone wanting to end their lives through euthenasia equally and says it is illegal. There are just some matters that are too personal and the government should have no control over these situations.

The reason that I think that the government or the Medical board should have some say in this matter is because of the amount of requests that there would be, as in people who are not terminally ill or in pain, ect.  Just the shear numbers of people who would be knocking down the doors to end their lives without a legit reason would be incredible, so It has to be regulated, or it will get out of control! As far as the personal aspect of the manner, there are legal ways to keep things like this on the downlow, family members should take responsibility and show discreetness as well. You know there is always someone else out there ready to capitalize on someone elses life choices and blurt it out to the world just to make a buck.... :dontknow:

People in serious clinically diagnosed pain are different, they are very aware of their condition and what will be down the road. If there were an option availiable to them to do this, it would be cool. I do know situations can dramatically change in ones life to where they might change their mind, but those with no hope of change and no options to heal-this would be for them-if they chose to do it. They should just add it as an option to the Advanced Directive law.

CPR-Cardio-Pulmonary Recusitation
OR
DNR-DO NOT Recusitate
OR
DAE- Doctor-Assisted Euthenaisia

....makes sense to me........ :star:

Having watched and waited helplessly while a cherished family member suffered in the final throes of cancer that riddled her body, I am 100% in favor of allowing a person to avoid that suffering if they choose to.

You have to keep in mind that when you go through this process, it takes a while.  Most patients that chose to go through this procedure talk with their families about it and take a while to think it through.  If it was regulated, as the OP stated, it would be impossible make this decision over a short period of time.

I watched my grandfather waste away in a hospice.  They eventually give you way more pain medication than normal, which kills you eventually anyway. So I don't see anything wrong with this.

Nope, because the person is not in the right frame of mind, and this is more or less murder, taking one's life, even when they are taking their own it is murder.

I beg to differ, alot of people that are in clinically diagnoses chronic pain that can make sensible decisions. So who exactly would be in the right frame of mind to make that decision, a very personal one???

That is absolutely ridiculous!  And untrue.

It is in our genes to survive at whatever cost; most people are not strong enough mentally to outsmart their genes, and therefore will persist in living in very horrible conditions simply because they don't want to die.  They will even resort to doing awful things like stealing and killing others before they will take their own lives, so you have no need to worry about there being "out-of-control requests".

The people who can outsmart the survival instinct will gladly take their own lives; they don't need some doctor to do it.  And that is their freaking right to end their own life, case closed.  Last time I checked, we weren't in danger of extinction.

AND MURDER IS MURDER! YOU CANNOT KILL SOMEONE, THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS MAKE THEM COMFORTABLE.

Am I "murdering" my skin cells every time I scratch my nose?

Aren't all of our soldiers "murdering" the bad guys over in the Middle East?

Isn't it "murder" to kill cats and dogs SO THEY DON'T SUFFER due to illness or injury?

Isn't meat MURDER?

Where do you draw the line??

We are in danger of extinction. Global Warming!! If those ice caps melt - that's it, we will be swimming.

And what is one of the largest contributing factors to climate change?  OVERPOPULATION.  So you see, more people killing themselves/being "murdered" could only BENEFIT our planet.  Preferably the idiots.
