Should Baseball add a Salary Cap?
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:55:44 am »
Another major league season is about to start with another off season coming to a conclusion. After watching some teams add to payrolls over 100 million dollars I just scratch my chin and wonder why haven't they began to talk about a salary cap? Yes every now and than you see a team make it to the play offs with out spending and more spending but it seems to be the same teams almost every year with the one or two teams that manage to shock the world. I am a big fan of adding the salary cap. Look at the nfl and how they have many teams that are major players each and every year. I say make it fair across the board and give every team a chance to land that big time player not just one or two teams.

Plus who wants to see all of these players getting 20 or 30 or 40 million dollars a year to play a sport when we have doctors, police officers, fire fighters, and almost any other person that helps the community. I am not saying they don't deserve to be paid good but that much?

Probably.
So many people get so much more money than their job is worth.

I agree but also disagree because there are to many families in poverty that are hard working families who build houses, fix plumbing and help with charities. I love watching sports but when I hear a pro sports star say on live tv or to the media that they aren't getting paid enough or that they can't feed there families. It just really upsets me when I know people who have lost there house or facing foreclosure.

I too think there does need to be a salary cap. They need to make a living and should be able to, but
100 million dollars for playing a game, is too much money.

Granted i wasnt good enough to go pro but i loved the game played all the time as a kid.  then as adult played beer games. I lost total interest in pro baseball  i was a strike defector way back when. My dad played  for the redsox farm team he was lucky to get any more than room and board. Now its like the more rhoids you do the higher the pay keep hitting those 500 foot home runs. Ill take pete rose willie mays all of the 69 mets and orioles over anyone playing today. money soured the game  :BangHead:

There absolutely has to be a salary cap. I hate seeing NY buy the best talent every year. Small markets just can't compete and as soon as they develop a star caliber player...off he goes to a major market.

Yes all sports should have a cap.  There is no reason for professional athletes to make millions a year - want to help the economy?  Pay all pros less and lower the cost of tickets so all games are sold out because people can afford the tickets.

They definitely need one.  I hate how the big market teams such as the Yankees and the Red Sox outbid every other team and get the best players.  The league needs to step up and implement a salary cap.  The players make way too much for the job they have.  Heck, I'd be able to retire nicely with a one year salary of some big name player.

i dont see why baseball players get paid so much. baseballs is a terrible sport. it kinda simulates a black guy swinging a bat at your car and running off

All sports should; the amount they get paid is just ridiculous for what they are asked to do.

Yeah....I think there should be one too....although I disagree with the person who said that baseball is a terrible sport....indeed, it might not appear as "tough" as some other sports, but it's still great, and not easy!

Lets say there is a cap.

Lets say the white collars start tripling their money.

Wouldn't it be fair to re-negotiate the contracts to break the cap since the players products (cards, jerseys, dolls etc) are helping pay for the franchises?

I'm not for their salaries justifying $100 million dollar contracts, but I am more not for the executives making all the money off the backs of the players.

Of course the owner should make a nice percentage since he/she/they own the rights.
