Ummm Does that mean attitude problem?
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:23:22 pm »
I was asking a question about something not working and making a statement about the way I have always done something on a particular site.  The reply I got back from the moderator was "UMMM it has never been that way and it is generally is not to be done like that".  I just replied that it was the way I have done it before, and I had no idea or indication that it was not correct and that there were never and guidelines on how it was to be done.

I just felt that when she said UMMM, at the beginning of her sentence.  It sounded like the person was talking down to me or had an attitude.  I am usually pretty easy going, but it kind of bugged/annoyed me.  What do you think about typing in the word UMMM first when giving an answer to a legitimate question.  Perhaps since it is typed instead of spoken it comes across in a different way.  thanks for listening/comments

ummm, I would think they are putting a sentence together or collecting thoughts.

I would typically think this, too.....had it been verbally said and when said, it is usually an unintentional sound made when thinking. Since it was typed out, it would normally be used to be condescending in an answer. Why would you need to use "ummm" when thinking while you are typing. A person would could just stop typing while pulling thoughts together. Especially the very "simple" thought that was used as an answer to the original poster's question by the moderator in question.

Communication is an ongoing process to master for everyone. Sometimes what is implied and received are two different things. At work, we are ask to be very careful in our email because certain things doesn't sound very nice in writing.
In this case, I see that you are obviously bothered by the communication received from this moderator. I can't say if that person actually mean to be this way, but it is a good point to bring up incase that person did not. This way, you are giving this person a chance to clear up the misunderstanding. I would say that you will be able to determine this for sure if you let her know how you feel.

The world isn't sunshine and farts.

Get over it.

I don't even see why you'd post this.

It could be a good idea to bring it up to clear the air, but I do not even know this person.  I am not that bothered about it. It would be more important if it was at work or somebody I knew personally.  It just struck me as unnecessary and I felt like I was being talked down to. I usually do not get talked to like that, and  I was just just wondering what others thought about UMMM.

I do not know what your expression means, but it seems that you sound just about as annoyed reading my post as I was when I was dealing with the "moderator" on the other site.   ???

I think because 'ummm' was in all caps that it meant that the moderator had an attitude. But I wouldn't have looked at it like that. It just meant that the moderator was trying to gather exact words to say in response. We all have brain farts sometimes. I know I do. You try to say the right things to not come off offensive to others. Like the saying goes, "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say nothing at all."

Exactly. So why even bother posting this response?

As a moderator they may have had to answer the same question hundreds of times and wished people would stop and think for a change. We don't know both sides of the story.

Nope that was not the case  I personally would rather use my head, instead of taking the time to type out questions, but I am sure some others would rather ask, instead of using their heads.  Even so, there is no reason for disrespect.  It was more my statement, and not the question that caused the UMMM, (AFAIK)

All of a sudden the daily clicks were not working like they used to, and I merely asked about it in a respectful way and I explained how it was working in the past.  There have been many recent comments in other forums about the site in question where people have complained about poor attitudes in dealing with the admin, along with many other complaints.  The thing is, is that the "moderators" charged with the task of "moderating" the chat box are the ones that really need the moderating, they are worse than the users of the site.

Based on all of the comments here and elsewhere, I am now convinced that the site in question, is one to stay away from.

Ummm...no! I don't think it's uhh...an attitude problem. Besides..err...it's the internet! You shouldn't really overthink a response from...uhhhh...a person you'll never meet on a subject that's probably miniscule. Ummm what was the context?
