babies and eczema ?
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:48:40 am »
Eczema is a skin condition of dry, extra-sensitive skin. My baby is being treated for this. The doctor gave me some lotion to rub on it after every bath. But I don't see it getting better. I was putting the Aquaphor vaseline it makes it fade away a bit but after a while it comes back this is frustrating me :( I don't want to see my baby like this. Any ideas on what should I consider to prevent future break outs? Is anyone going through this with their little one? ??? ::)

its common -- could be an allergy but maybe not.
our pediatrician told us to only give our son a bath every other day when he was little and that didn't help too much -- we also use hydrocortizone cream (generic brand) and that helped some.  We certainly use the lotion and baby oil in the bath water.  We also have a humidfier in his room nightly  - not sure if this really made a difference or not though

Eczema affects ten to twenty percent of children under the age of one. It will very likely improve with age or even disappear. It is a hereditary condition, so if either parent suffers from it, their baby has a greater chance of developing eczema. Sounds like you are on the right track with less bathing, gentle cleansers and mositurizing after bathing.  If the eczema is bad enough putting mittens on the babies hands to stop scratching is a good idea.  Also, I noticed that someone mentioned allergies in relation to eczema this is something really worthy of checking out (milk, grains, etc.).  Good luck - I know it is hard to see your child suffering and not know what to do. :(

Those were great comments for this condition. I also like to add that the area affected must be dry and clean at all times. You need to check and be sure that the creases around elbow, knees and ears are not moist. This causes the irriation and the condition will worsen. Food allergies is the number one cause for this. Stay away from dairy and shellfish. Seafood is definite no no. You will get an instant rash from eating enough of the shellfish. This condition does go away with age. Some may not but most have been know to go away.
