Raking the Leaves
« on: December 06, 2021, 01:50:48 pm »
Just wondering what everyone things the etiquette is for raking leaves in the fall. I have been raking every week yet my neighbors aren't doing it and their leaves are blowing on my lawn. It is now december and some people still haven't raked their lawn.

I rarely rake the yard. I figure the leaves decompose and are good for the lawn. Plus I'm lazy.  :P

Honestly, I think it depends on the neighborhood/community. In some places it is perfectly acceptable to leave leaves alone. In other places it is bad etiquette to downright dangerous to leave leaves alone. We have no front yards on our side of the street and the other side has very small ones. But my house DOES have a single tree inside a fence. I rake/sweep (we have a sidewalk right on the street curb) those leaves regularly every fall because if I do not - it clogs the storm sewer drains which could result in flooding. But if we had larger lawns and lived in a more rural setting, I would probably just leave them alone to decompose like linderlizzie suggests.

I'm having my sons rake my yard day after tomorrow- I waited until all the leaves fell off the tree.  Maybe your neighbors are doing the same.

I agree.  This is why we don't rake the back yard anymore, just the front.

My lawnmover is a muncher I don't rake the leaves anymore.

Did you intentionally write MUNCHER instead of MULCHER? because I like the visual imagery of a lawn mower :::nom nom nomming::: on some leaves!

This picture of a lawn "muncher"  made me laugh.  :)

I have no leaves to worry about, but it is a job raking them.

Stop creating more work for yourself.  Stop raking it's a losing battle.  Your neighbors are smart follow their lead.  I raked about two weeks ago and the leaves are back I'm not raking again.  We don't have any trees in the yard anymore we cut them down a few years ago.

We live in the country, so the most we do is keep them blown off the porch.

We are rural, we just mow them up. They make good compost.

 :cat:

I agree to mow and mulch the dropping leaves!  I add compost (stinky) and the resulting spring lawn is green and grows quickly, needs a bit of water now and then in winter time, but no trouble at all!  Lasts till next winter!

We have the same problem. We don't have that many trees, but our neighbors do, and we end up having to rake their leaves that blow into our yard.
