I think it's lack of respect to just show up at someone's door or anywhere without calling first.

before the pandemic I might consider going to a relatives house without calling especially if they were close. Now I don't go anywhere without calling and making sure it is OK.

I don't care for pop ups either but I still see family on the rare occasion they pop up because I only have a few I keep in contact with.  I definitely see your point.

I would definitely call first before going to see someone. I do not like it when people just show up to my place. I am also most likely not to go to see someone unless I was invited.

My grandmother always says I don't have to call when I'm in town but it's a courtesy.

Right. It 100% depends on who you are visiting. If it is close family it is not a big deal. If it is random friends I would say call and see if they are home and it is convenient for you to stop by. I know a woman who use to try to push her way in to people's homes. She would call and if they did not answer she would text and say I am on my way to your house.  She done that several times to a woman who was sick.  The woman did not want company but this busy body kept trying to push her way in.  She is terrified of "the virus" so she does not do it any more.

I always call first if planning to visit and I would expect the same consideration.   I'll probably tell you thru the security system it's not a good time to visit and lets schedule it for another time.
