Is Democracy For Sale?
« on: November 03, 2020, 08:21:26 am »
How often do you think the biggest spender wins the election here in the U.S?  Would you be surprised to find out it's 88.5% of the time in the House and 82.9% of the time in the Senate?

This is why big interest groups, or PACS, and Citizens United must be a thing of the past.  It is time for limits on political campaign spending and for donations be limited to what is called "grassroots" donations.  Yes, in 2008, a conservative advocacy group, Citizens United, challenged the Federal Election Commission (FEC) rules in the Supreme Court that banned attack ads funded by outside groups shortly before an election. In a 5-4 decision, the good ole Supreme Court overturned key campaign finance rules and cases and it has been a nasty free-for-all ever since.  It is time to get the money from big corporations and wealthy interest groups out of politics to the extent that Citizens United has let them in!!!

I can see where spending the most money can have an advantage.

But in the sports world how many times have teams spent a lot of money on players that have been busts?

Happens quite a bit.

There is a sports saying.Thats why they play the games. You dont win on paper.

I don't think we are looking at this in the same way.  I am talking the political world, not the sports world.  Two very different things.  Citizens United and other big PACS control the message very often because of the money they pump into elections rather than there being a limit to what a candidate can spend and allowing the average citizen to be competitive.

Janice i dont know much about it.

i just agreed that having more money could work as an advantage but not a guarantee thats why i brought up sports world.

Also consider other variables with candidates.Hometown, who is better looking,religeon.....get the point?

Seems what UR saying CU and PACs try to make a fair fight?

Again politics isnt my forte.I just tried to use common sense and logic here.

Everything is for sale, so why not?

Actually, what I am saying is that the introduction of BIG money by corporations and the very wealthy tend to influence elections much more than they should and undermine grassroots efforts.  The average guy cannot compete with the very wealthy.

I don't understand why this whole process has to be a year-long circus. This is where the money gets wasted.

Well it works that way in sports too.

Florida Marlins cant compete with NY Yanks.I can name more too.

Yanks havent won series since 2009.Spending isnt a guarantee but as we see this yr in LA Dodgers case they finally got over the top.

U can look at healthcare with those that have money too.Magic Johnson,Farah Fawcett, even tho she died she lasted longer then a poor person would have.

Money helps in this world but as Jesus said, what good is it if a man gains the whole world but cant save his own soul.
