Living in Oregon that is a common occurrence, but the worst time was during the rut on an Illinois freeway I hit a big buck when going 80 miles an hour and he flew up on the hood and looked right in through  the windshield at me. I was just thankful my wife was asleep. It was a rental car and still drivable, so I just dropped it off like normal and my insurance took care of it.

A deer hit you in a rental car and you had to pay for it?  I would say go ask the deer for insurance lol. I thought they had their own insurance. They as in the people who own the rental cars.
They do have insurance they offer when you pick up the rental, but your own comprehensive insurance covers hitting a deer, so I never buy the supplemental insurance they offer.

I only had a rental once and it was paid for my the insurance company of the idiot who ran in to the side of my vehicle.  Seems like I do remember having that option.  I wasn't sure that your own insurance always covered you driving someone else's car.  But I guess maybe it does.  I would think you would have to notify them.  I guess asking the deer for insurance is not going to happen. lol

I hit a deer, three years ago, with my nineteen sixty five Jeep CJ at about fifty five miles per hour. I keep a baseball bat and KBar combat knife in my vehicle for occasions such as that (in case I need to lay a suffering creature to rest). I turned around to make sure the deer was not suffering but found that the deer had been completely demolished. I moved the pieces off to the ditch on the side of the road figuring it would probably be a good meal for coyotes or other scavengers. My bumper was a little bent so i hooked a cable to it and a concrete post and pulled it out. A deer ran into my wife's Lexus and the fender, bumper and headlight had to be replaced as well as the steering. Including paint the cost was over four thousand dollars (insurance paid for it).

I have never hit one but do fear one running out in front of me while driving on certain roads.

My son is a deer magnet.  He's always been able to keep it and get it processed.
