My local library is also not enforcing a strict requirement of silence so it is difficult to go there for peace and quiet to read or do some other quiet sort of activity. I think this is because libraries are beginning to not be about books so much as other things these days, like community centers.

Some years back, I loved visiting the Library where I lived.  They had these comfortable chairs in which you could relax in while reading.  I haven't visited the Library in a number of years.  New technology is here.

I love libraries. My library is pretty small so it is easy to hear most conversations that may be happening. But for the most part people respect library etiquette.

Usually you can make eye contact with one of the workers and they'd ask him to quiet down.

People don't whisper anywhere they should. Libraries, movies, it doesn't matter... Every time we go to one of these places you can constantly hearing people shush others. Then they get looked at like they are crazy, mean or rude.

Usually I only go to the library to take my 3 year old grandson to story time.  A bunch of toddlers is certainly not quiet.  It is a very loud experience for a libabry.

My husband is at the library once a week.  We no longer stay at the library because they built a new one a few years ago and it's all chrome and glass, chairs are really uncomfortable so we go to check out books.

I like going to the library.  Get a few  books  try to find more time to read. Nothing like holding book in your hand and peace and quite at home to read.

I still go to the library, though not as regularly as I did 20 years ago before I had a computer. I also read books less now which has something to do with that. At my local library this wasn't usually an issue of noise unless a class was being taught across from us on the other computers. It was usually always quiet and peaceful there with the only noises being some typing on the keys. One of the libraries I go is rated one of the best in the US and is also just as quiet and peaceful. When I go now it 's just for fun to get out of the house  or to pickup a book I can't get at my local library.

I go to my library all the time, but I bring books home to read them. Although it has a wonderful wall that is all a window, viewing the river. Some day I will sit down when its nice and warm and just watch the river. Im always afraid of getting too warm and falling asleep in the comfy chairs.

Ive never seen anyone speak loud there, tho the last time I was there, as I was walking to find my book I could hear a woman reading aloud, and when I rounded a corner there she/they were, Im assuming it was her boyfriend, who was laying down with his head in her lap, and she was reading a book to him, his shirt was half way up his big belly hanging out, I just walked on and shook my head afterwards. There was noone around, they were in the back of the library, but I did think to myself, take that home noone wants to see or hear that

I don't go often, but when I do I still enjoy; people are generally quiet, lots of people on computers.
